NP 420 to 435 '64 D~100

Post by dbolterII »

Howdy, just throwing this out there in case it can help someone down the line...

I am in the middle of swapping my 420 to a 435 with the parking brake on the trans.

I believe the 435 is out of a 1965 D~100 and there are a few differences that I was not expecting.

Overall the 435 is roughly 1" longer I think my driveshaft is going to work, but its close and may need to be shortened...

There are two boss mounting holes on the 420 to mount the parking brake band that are not present on the 435 so its a slightly different mounting bracket on the 435.

I believe the 435 with the Trans parking brake is 1965 one year only...

Where the shifter stick comes out on the 435 is a few inches further back, so I believe I will be cutting my floor pan a little bit, also the Shifter sticks themselves are bent slightly differently although interchangeable. I will see which one feels better once the trans is installed. Also the 420 has threads for a screw on knob where the 435 stick accepts a press on knob.

Any thoughts and comments appreciated, I'll try to post some pic's if I can figure it out.... Updates to come as I make more progress.

Regards from minn, ~d.b.o.l.t.e.r.

I think medium duty trucks may have kept the parking brake on the transmission rear for much later than 1965, maybe even to the end of the run in 1977.

I have a 1976 NP540 5-speed from a school bus that has the parking brake on the rear. My 1975 W600 has it in the transfer case.

looks like you have all the right parts. driveline brakes are the best. It will hold the truck on any incline. wheel type wont. I think the light duty trucks ran driveline ebrake till 69 when the wheel brake style came out

My '68 NP435 W200 and my '67 A727 D200 both came with wheel e-brakes.

I think that light duty Sweptline drive line e-brakes [100/200] went through '64.
My early '65 D100 had drum cable e-brakes. :study There might have been
some carry over into subsequent years[?] :thinking I'm sure others can chime
in here. Any of the later Sweptlines I own or have owned/parted had drum cable
e-brakes.

Unless it's a W series, my 65 still has it on the tcase, 66 does'nt. I found the components and put the ebrake on the tcase on my 67, that way I won't need to worry about burning the ebrake cables on the exhaust.

I don't think D300s went to wheel ebrake till 69. my latest D300 was a 66 and it was on the tranny
