We could use a little more specificity. Is this an LA318 or a poly A318? Did the engine come out of a manual or auto trans vehicle? What year is the truck? Is this a pre-'69 hydro bell or a 69+ manual clutch?

If it is a D100 with a 5-bolt pattern, I'd get a Dana 8-3/4 axle (with the drop-out carrier) which makes changing axle ratios MUCH easier.

OK, so it's an LA-318. I am assuming you know to have the crank bored for the pilot bushing.

With the 318, you'll get enough torque to handle a taller axle ratio.
Gear ratios available on the 8-3/4" axle through the years include: 2.76, 2.93, 3.23, 3.31, 3.55, 3.73, 3.91, 4.10, 4.56, 4.89, 5.17, 5.57. On OEM gear sets, the ratio is usually stamped on the ring gear edge. Ratio may be determined by the number of teeth on the ring gear divided by the number of teeth on the pinion gear or by counting the ratio of the number of turns of the pinion relative to one turn of the axle shaft. I'd look for at least 3.55 unless I was going for smaller diameter tires to lower the truck.

With the '69, you have a mechanical clutch linkage. What do you plan for a transmission? For freeway speeds, you have two choices in 4-speeds: the NP435 truck transmission and the A-833 automotive trans. For the latter, you'd probably need an automotive bell housing which would likely work with that truck. The 69+ NP435 with a matching LA bell is a sure fit. Check your Private Messages.

What is your current axle gear ratio? There were a lot of half ton Slant 6 three speed manual
trucks that had 3.91 gears. You're saying that the RPMs are 6500 at 65mph?... Really??... :thinking
Do you have an accurate tach in this truck?

If its pure speed you're after..... find a 2.76 or 2.94 chunk and put it in. :2cents

I had a 360, aluminum intake, edilbrock afb, and headers. With np-435 and the 3.23 rear set in a 8.75. D-100. At close to 100 mph the truck would feel like it was ready to take off like an airplane.

Looks like it might have a pilot bushing in it already. If so, you have a find!
