half circles on edge of piston.

Post by Jim100 »

I was looking at a 440 engine on ebay. It is 499 dollars to be rebuilt. There are pictures looking down into the block at the tops of the pistons. On several you can see little half circles. It is driving me crazy as to what they are.

Valves kissed pistons or valve reliefs cut into piston. :thinking :thinking :thinking :thinking

Does it have a high lift cam in it? Sounds like somebody did that and then shaved the heads to get compression.

If that's the case, no wonder it's cheap... a short block in drag so to speak.

I'll go hide now.

Its the 1978 499$ one on ebay right now. I have no clue what I'm even looking at. Is it a weight balance thing? I don't know why I care it just is stuck in my head. Take a look at it.
Thanks!

Post a link and I'll look. Not going to search ebay for it.

Looks to me its the index mark for installing piston pointing towards front of engine.

Pistons are usually balanced on the under side of piston.

Yes it does - but they're the biggest, ugliest gashes Ive ever seen! And why is there 2?
