Re: Thinking about putting a later model automatic with OD behind my 1966 318 poly
By that, I believe PWD means a bell housing on an automatic transmission, which would mean that the auto trans for a Poly v. an LA would be different.
BTW, where is the bolt that doesn't line up? Is it one of the 3/8"-16 NC bolts around the top or a 7/16"-14 NC bolt at the bottom?

"hydro" is short for "hydraulic clutch" bell housing, used from 61-68.earlymopar wrote: ↑Thu Dec 12, 2019 7:05 amUnless I misunderstood, the question was in reference to differences between the A and LA bell housing bolt patterns. There is one bolt hole on an LA bolt pattern that is off from the A series. The result is that when the LA application bell housing is used on an A series engine, one bolt is left out given it does not align with a tapped hole in the block. I'm running an LA series bell housing on my 64 Utiline / Poly and ran into this issue when mating-up the TK0-600. I don't know what a "hydro" bell housing is.

You keep saying a "LA series bell housing" and I'm asking how u define that term?
Poly 318's were used up thru 66 and LA 318's were used in 67/68 trucks. It seems the exact same hydraulic clutch bell housing was used for both engines. If that is correct, then what is meant by "LA series bell housing"?
Bill, where are u???

Hydro refers to Hydraulic Bell housing instead of a mechanically operated bell housing using z bar etc. And I also had an LA Bell housing in my 66 at one time behind an LA 318. When I installed the rebuilt 66 A series 318 the correct bell housing was installed.earlymopar wrote: ↑Thu Dec 12, 2019 7:05 amUnless I misunderstood, the question was in reference to differences between the A and LA bell housing bolt patterns. Re: Thinking about putting a later model automatic with OD behind my 1966 318 poly
There is no part referred to as a "bell housing" in the parts book. There is a clutch housing which has a different part number for trucks up to serial number 1668000 than those after that number. That would be the first 1967 truck. The automatic transmission has this as part of the case itself, but it is in the transmission section of the parts book that Scott never uploaded. I do not have a 63-68 parts book so I use the one on this site.

Re: Thinking about putting a later model automatic with OD behind my 1966 318 poly
If "Hydro" only signifies mounting provisions for a hydraulic slave cylinder, Hydro has nothing to do with the bolt pattern in question. I can only say that the LA series block and the A series have a different bolt pattern at the rear bell housing flange (semantics aside) due to the single bolt hole mentioned. Regardless of an overlap in years, they are slightly different blocks in more than one location...….

Re: Thinking about putting a later model automatic with OD behind my 1966 318 poly
To clarify further, the bolt hole on the A series that does not align with the through holes on later manual transmission bell housings or automatic transmissions with integrated bell housings is the driver's side hole next to the locating pin (next to the starter). On a poly these holes (side to side on the drivers and passenger's sides) are symmetrical. They are not symmetrical on the LA. Most doing a swap just leave the bolt out. Others have drilled a new but oversized hole.

It refers to the bell housing used from 61 - 68 with the clutch lever opening on the RIGHT side.
69-71 mechanical clutch bell has the opening on the LEFT side.
BOTH are used with the LA 318.

Yes. Understood. But, left, right, hydraulic or mechanical still appear to have the afore mentioned bolt pattern issue.

I am installing an NV4500 trans from a 1992 W250 behind my Poly, I decided to drill the extra hole for the clutch housing bolt. It is the top hole below the locating dowel.
