Need a better fuel tank setup

Post by joep71pw »

Need some ideas for a fuel tank for my 71 W100. The previous owner removed the tank from inside the cab (good) and replaced it with a small tank where the spare goes. Problem is that it's about a 12 gallon tank and the way he put it in, i can only use about 9 gallons unless I'm pointed down hill (And who needs gas when you're pointed down hill???). Anyway, looking for ideas on about a 20-25 gallon option that works well in that or any other (outside the cab) location?

The "Search" engine on this site is a useful feature.... :idea :Thumbsup

Others have done this .... for uphill, downhill and level driving.

I could never find the right tank to purchase so I ended up getting a custom tank (w/ baffles) made that measures 33x25x7 (If I am remembering correctly) which equates to about a 24/25 gallon tank and it's mounted under the bed of the truck behind the rear axle. I had a trap door build into the bed to fill it. Here is a pic:

I searched. Got WAAAAAAAAY too many posts back and spent over an hour reading ones that ranged from not relevant to sort of relevant.

That is quite a setup! A little overkill for what I'm looking for, but sweet, thanks!!

I ended up using the 64 - 68 Mustang fuel injection gas tank. Build a frame to fit the tank, bolt the tank to the frame and the assembly to the truck frame no other mods needed plus, if you decide later to move to fuel injection the tank made for it is in place. The tank is made by Tanks Inc and is powder coated.

So what's wrong with setting beneath a single pull string incandescent light bulb writing angry letters?

I mocked up a '70-74 Cuda tank in my '70 shortbed and it fits in place of the spare. The advantage of this the filler neck is in the rear and can be fabbed up behind the rear license plate, so no cutting of the bed. You would need move the cross member. For a long bed, a '68-70 Plymouth Satellite/Road Runner tank will fit. Both tanks are about 18 gal.
