78 d100 automatic. Can I replace rear main seal with engine and tranny in truck????????

I know you can on the 4 speeds, but it's a pain. You have to drop the oil pan and loosen the crank bolts to do it, and work the new seal around the bearing journal. You're doing all of this with old oil dripping on you, working over your head, with minimal room to work and half the time you're doing it blind because there's something in the way.
If you can pull the motor and put it on a spinning stand, it makes replacing the seal successfully a lot easier.

I did my 68 in the truck. It had an old Rope seal. It was pretty simple once the pan was off. If you let it drain for a while, you won't have to worry about drips.
