Picking up a LA 360 for a 69 d100

Post by stumblinhorse »

I am going to try to pick up a LA 360 to do as a build over the next few months for my 69 d100 with a np435.

I know about the external balance vs internal and need a 360 balancer. I think I will need a different flywheel that is also balanced. That is fine since I will do a new clutch at the same time. Motor mount difference I will just to a few extra washers as spacers.

Questions that I have:
Should I do a 143 or 130 tooth flywheel?
Do the accessories from the 318 bolt right up? Alternator is all I will have. Will the bracket from the 318 fit?
Anything I am missing?

I will do a mild performance cam rebuild on the 360.

Flywheel choice is dictated by bell housing. So whatever is in truck behind current 318 for diameter and tooth count you will have to use but will need to be balanced for the 360. :thinking :thinking
And the 360 you plan on using should already have correct harmonic balancer on it and it may or may not have hole in crankshaft for pilot bushing or hole depth. :thinking :thinking
My truck is younger than me.

Accessories all work if I remember right. I recall having to actually cut apart flip and weld one engine mount to get it to work.

My 69 318 w/np435 has a 143 tooth flywheel.
I have a mini starter on my 69 already. So does the tooth count matter still, or just size.

I may be wrong but cant you take the 318 flywheel that you have and have it drilled by a machine shop to be correct for a 360?

I have heard you can have a machine shop make it external balance. There seems to be a diagram somewhere that shows what to drill but I can’t find it on the inter web.

There is also this https://www.summitracing.com/parts/qti-rm-531 which is supposed to do the same thing.

I bought my 360 flywheel from Brewers. Now they have a refurb for 200 bucks. Not sure what a machine shop would charge to drill your flywheel.
If you google dodge 360 flywheel you will come across the diagram in images. With the measurements etc.
I don't think I could get myself to trust that bolt on gizmo even though it may work just fine.

Wouldn't a 130 tooth flywheel be smaller in diameter due to less teeth with the starter not meshing with flywheel teeth when engaging. :thinking :thinking

The 130 tooth flywheel is for the 833 transmission. It was mainly used in cars but trucks did have an 833OD offered in the late 70's. Yes it is smaller diameter.

You want the 143 tooth flywheel. It fits the bell of the 435 that was behind the 318.

Yes the LA318 flywheel can be balanced to work with a LA360.

I have been looking for the diagram or info to convert a 318 flywheel to externally balanced to give to a machine shop?

Ive seen the diagram, back when JimmieD and MoparNorm were alive. Its a complex bit of machine work and may be more costly than purchasing the correct flywheel new, unless they're not available.

Type "dodge 360 flywheel" in google and then go to images and several diagrams are there with all the numbers. But yeah it might be more than buying one.

I've just had my flywheel balanced to 360 specs. I have a new 172 tooth flywheel and was charged $550au to balance, machine and drill to suit clutch.
Bit more than what i was expecting but couldn't do much as needed it.

That's just over $415 in US currency. Still higher than I would have guessed.

The shop had never done a truck one before and were hesitant to do it. I guess thats why i got screwed a bit.
But can't fault the workmanship.
