318 Poly exhaust options

Post by Atmobil »

The exhaust system on my truck is not the best part of it. I put on a new muffler last year but I got a leak in it where the crossover pipe comes in to the passengerside pipe.
Sorry I got no pictures but I hope you understand what I'm talking about here.
I want to build a new exhaust and I'm looking for hints and tips. How have you guys done this?
Is there any "off the shelf" parts that I can order?
My main goal is to get an exhaust that is not to loud but gives a really good burbling sound.

Any good exhaust shop can make whatever you want. My 66 had a custom fabricated exhaust to match the original exhaust the truck came with in 66. Dual exhaust , No problem. If your good at welding and handy with a tape measure and have a cut off saw or side grinder with Zip cut blades you could buy a universal kit and fabricate your own. :thinking :thinking :thinking :thinking :thinking :thinking
My truck is younger than me.

Yes, I have come to the terms of having to fabricate it myself. I was just wondering if anyone had any good pictures of their own system and hints and tips on how to make the truck sound and run good.

On my '67 with '66 poly, came down off the center dump factory exhaust manifolds and used flowmaster style mufflers in position shown with pipe's out the back. :Thumbsup

Mine has dual flow masters pitching out each side of the bed in front of wheels. Very nice sound and not to loud.

Thank you for the pictures and tips. I will have to build a system of my own.
What about the crossoverpipe in front of the engine, is it more effective (for the engines abiltiy to breath) to have the exhaust come out on both sides of the engine equally with and X-shaped cross in the middle?
Or maybe just build two systems, one for each side?

I think normal dual exhaust works fine. (one for each side). But maybe a tube connecting them( Crossover?) is not that big of a deal and better?
Having now read a little bit it looks easy enough to add a H or X crossover at not a great cost or effort.

The exhaust shop that did my A318 dual system did put a crossover
pipe in. As it has been explained... you mark a line on the pipes from
where they begin to bend parallel to the ground. Run the engine
and note where the marker line burns off first. That location is where
you would want the crossover pipe, provided there are no obstacles. :idea :2cents

i never did understand the obsession with 'true duals'
except maybe they are easiest to install
