Slant 6 to V8 radiator

Post by joes68340s »

I recently picked up a 1971 shortbed D100. It was a six originally now 360 with the crappy 4 speed. I have notice that there is very little clearance for the fan to radiator. I can’t install a real fan. Is there a difference in the radiator supports for the 6 and V8. What mods have people done to gain clearance.

Maybe a different length pulley? I added a fan clutch and got the room by moving the radiator tanks in the steel bracket. Soldered in there.
What transmission do you have?

Not sure it’s the granny low 4 speed. I’m going to put an 833 in.

I would bet it's how the engine was mounted in the frame, type of mounts, modifications made, etc. The engine is likely forward of where it should be.

Does it have a fan spacer. Clearance should be fine with the 360 seeing as the dimensions are the same as the LA 318.

No spacer. I have been looking for photos of factory slant 6 trucks radiator support vs the 318 trucks. Can’t find a shot that shows them.

All rad supports are exactly the same on all trucks from 1/2 ton to 5 ton.

SL 6 rad support is the same as all other engines in sweptlines using the 2 headlight front end.

Post a couple of pictures to show us problem.

AGREED. 833 are tough for a car but 420s and 435s are super tough

Did they install a 4 core radiator when they put the 360 in? That would also cost you clearance space

No 3 core. It’s not a big deal I’m not restoring this thing. Just curious. Just old school hot rod truck.

Sweat the mounts off the sides of the radiator then swap sides with them. This will move the radiator ahead 3 or 4 inches.
