NP435 OR NOT

Post by raceguy »

Ok so I'm building a 64 short wheel base 4x4 truck. I'm putting a 440 in the truck. I have a np435 and a 540 transmission. The truck has 4.10 gears and the 201 transfer case. I'm wondering how many of you have a big block with a np540 and do you like. Should I use the stock np435 or the np540? Thanks

Do you have a bellhousing to put the 540 behind a 440?

I own a 440/540, but it's not currently in a vehicle. I do drive a 318/540 & prefer it over a 318/435 that I used to own.

Ya I have the bellhousing. From what I have researched 4th gear in the 435 is the same as 5th gear in the 540.is that true?

Yes, 4th on a 435 is direct drive (1:1), same as 5th on a 540. There are 540 OD out there but they weren't in Dodges.

First gear is really low in the 435 and not usually needed with a 440's torque. How big of a tire are you going to run? With the 4.10's you could run a 38 inch tire with good highway manners with the 440.

An NP445 would be a way better choice behind a 440 in SWB truck.
