I found this 68 np435 but the housing is broken
Is this cosmetic or a don’t use it till it’s fixed issue?
I see a top cover replacement on eBay for $125 but it looks complicated
To replace.
Thanks

{1} Shift gears into neutral (2} Remove lever retainer by pressing down, rotating retainer counterclockwise slightly, then releasing. {3] Remove lever and it's springs and washers. {4} Remove cab transmission tunnel cover. (5) Remove cover screws (one screw on each side is shouldered for alignment} and while lifting cover rotate cover slightly counter clockwise to provide clearance to shifting forks and remove cover. Note: When reinstalling use new gasket. (1) Install one screw on each side of case and try gears for free rotation by shifting gears through cover tower with long screwdriver. {2] Install remaining cover screws. (3} Reinstall cab transmission cover. {4} Install gear shift lever and be sure gears shift into all speed ranges.

If you are willing to drive to Wichita Falls, Texas (140 miles) I have a 23 spline NP435 you can have for $20. The top should interchange with your's.

I have decided to pass on the purchase of the 68 dodge. Several experts suggest there is a reason the housing broke, and that there is probable
Internal gear issues.
Appreciate the help and offer.
Thanks
Robert

I'm no expert.... but I'm thinking someone who didn't know how to remove
the stick shift retainer went after it with the wrong [oversized] tool. :joker :2cents

Would like to hear how the "experts" think an internal gear problem would wreck the top of the shift tower casting?
Have had a couple trannys with broken gears and such myself. Drove em hundreds of miles with no effect whatsoever on the shifter or cover.

Terry,
You are probably right. Looks like an expert hit it with a 5 pound sledge for sure.

The seller "obviously knows" that the cover/shifter assembly is extremely hard to remove and replace... Therefore, you ought to be able to knock another $500 or more off the price...
