Recently bought a 1964 W200 and it’s looks like there is 54 years of grime on it. It sure looks stock. Did the 1964 W200 ever come stock with a 383 engine? This also has a 4 speed on the floor tranny. Again appearing stock. 1st gear (granny?) is useless, so I start off in second. Can you tell me most likely what tranny this is? If I were to replace the tranny and keep the 383 what tranny recommendations would complement the 383 both manual and auto with overdrive? One last question: what hubcaps work on a 64 w200 8 bolt 16” rim with lockout 4x4 hubs? Pics coming.
Thanks
Gerald

Re: Recently acquired 1964 W200
I don't think the 383 was offered until 1967.
The New Process 420 was used up until about 64. I think it wasn't synchro in 1st or 2nd & may have needed to use old school "double clutch" method of shifting.
The New Process 435 was introduced around 1964, had a 6.68 granny gear. Most drove it like a 3 speed, using 2-3-4. It was used behind the 383 67-71. Your's is most likely the NP435.

420 is cast iron top cover. 435 is aluminum top cover.

The 383 began to show up in the '67 model year. What does the VIN tag
call out for the engine? I believe another member here had a early W200
that came with a 413 [Terry? ].
As for the hubcap, do your wheels have a rim for
a dog dish cap or are they original wheels that take
a "female" dog dish?

I had a 63 D200 came with a 318, but dealer swapped in a 413 a few months after purchase.
