Thinking about that sticking problem you might feel the end closest to the carb to see if you can feel a burr on it at the opening. If you do you could file it off. After many years of use it is posible for the inside of that end to mushroom a little. Just a thought.

don't know if it's helpful,
but here's a couple shots that show the upper throttle and kickdown linkages on my 318 with 2bbl
which i'm pretty certain is the original V8 setup

This doesn't help your sticky or short stroke linkage problem but will cause havoc with idle.
Is this vac port still uncapped?

Nope - was just unplugged while I was cleaning.
So I sprayed a bunch of carb cleaner all over and inside and it seems to have fixed the problem. I also have a rod linkage coming later this week and am going to try to attach it to ensure WOT happens when pedal is fully pressed (only engages about 50% currently).
