About every 10th time or so; when I go to start my '68 W-300 with 318 engine, I get a grinding noise and the engine does not turn over. It will do this once, twice maybe 3 times then start as normal. All the other times I get a normal start - no noise.
I figured the flywheel had a broken or damaged tooth so I removed the clutch cover and checked. The teeth on the flywheel are fine. Next I removed the starter, thinking the teeth on the starter may be bad; however they were fine. Next maybe the solenoid was hanging up so I ran the starter about 50 times on the bench and the starter and solenoid worked fine.
Any ideas as to what is causing the intermittent grinding noise??
