New, occasional clutch/grinding problem

Post by wally426ci »

68 D100 NP435 hydraulic system sleeved with stainless, McLeod diaphragm clutch - no issues until last week

I'm typically cool with the standard, worn Chinese parts diagnosis. However, I have a recent problem that I suspect is not this issue. No issues on my recent trip TO Carlisle at an hour and a half. While I was there, a new problem arose. I was shifting like normal and ground when going into 4th.

I Hated it and it didn't happen again until my trip home through the country side. I had a 2nd and third instance again.

Yesterday it happened again. Before I went on the trip, I topped the master which really didn't need it but I was going over everyrthing for a smooth trip. So far, no fluid missing from the clutch master.

I pulled the inspection plate on the bell housing and it was moist with gear oil but not a horrible mess. I replaced the front shaft seal in 2011 or so and I am praying that this "new?" leak isn't the cause...... friggin nightmare to yank tranny. I don't know if I remember a leak before the trip..... :thinking I do see that the bottom of trans is "wet" in apperance now.

Any suggestions?

Hey Shawn, sorry to here you are having a problem. Is it making any noise? Maybe a synchro. bad? Have you tried dbl clutch into 4th? Can you tell if the leak is from the input shaft area ?. Hope it's nothing serious. Chris.

Thanks Chris. HAven't double clutched. It looks to be leaking around the "plate" outside of the shaft itself (maybe 4" diameter with bolts through face?)

I won't have much time for the next couple weeks but I'll get to it and dig around. I welcome comments until then! :salut

*EDIT: if I pull the top cover, is there anything I would see to point to a bad synchro?

That "plate" is the input bearing retainer. It could be leaking outside of that (gasket) or the inside (seal).

Thanks Bucky; didn't have the official name. Bummed about the issue but I think I will see if I can narrow it down but cleaning everything. May pull the top cover and check out the gear/synchros.

As stated above, it could be leaking from those two places but the grinding concerns me. Could be a front bearing in the trans. going down and causing all the problems. Be careful how far out you go.
