67 318 sweptline header recommendations

Post by Shifty »

Hello everyone. I have a 1967 dodge sweptline shortbox with a 3 on the tree. The 318 motor is a 1974 and I will be putting on a set of 302 castiing heads off of an 87 W150 and am looking for header recommendations . I'm not really sure what will work on these trucks. I'm not scared of a little fab work and will be toying with the rest of the exhaust as well. What is on there right now is absolutely shot. Any info on brands, part numbers....I'll take whatever I can get. It's kind of a budget build so I can't break the bank, and I'd hate to take a chance on something and have them not work. Thanks everyone!!

I would look at the stainless short tube headers on e-bay that are under 150 bucks.

There are very few long tube headers that will fit. The Hedman 79010 may be the only one that fits a pre 69 truck.

And you can get them with a ceramic coating.

Thanks for the help guys, yeah 500 is way out of range for me for sure. I will have to look into some of the other ones though. Any more info on the ones mentioned on ebay?

Found these in a quick search.....

http://www.ebay.com/itm/FOR-CHRYSLER-LA ... hy&vxp=mtr

Are they the ones you were talking about Jim? What do you guys think of going with something like this? I'd like to get some noticible gains by adding them... but that being said, this is never going to be a race engine or anything really crazy. They are affordable and are pretty much the same set up as a stock manifold, I just don't know much about their performance. Opinions?

If those Hedmans will definitely fit, I wouldn't mind spending the extra cash, if they were a better way to go. The price is about the high end of what I want to spend.

I have the 79010 painted flat collector flange headers on my truck and they fit perfectly. 79016 are the HTC coated same collector. 79080 are basically the same overall shape but have the ball and socket collector flange. Definitely shop part numbers and prices.

Your truck in your avatar looks like a 69. A 67 is completely different.

The avatar is a 69 and what I have now is a 71 neither of which have any kind of cross member or support at the bell housing butt... The headers drop below the frame before passing beneath the transmission on either side. The Hedman site list them from 67 to 71.

I had the regular hedmans installed on a 4 speed 66 d-100 and a 4 speed w-100 with no issues. I never painted them and they are still working . I just thought for the price those stainless short tube headers would be a option. Especially if not on
a high rev engine?

I've looked at those shorty's many times. I'm not certain but I believe some of the Dakota's or Durango's sort of came with something very similar. Anything that will reduce back pressure has merit and stainless is a definite plus. Years and years ago... my first 69 d100 short bed was a 318 auto and would barely spin the tires so squeak, squeak was about it. I put Hedman's on and with open exhaust it spun so bad I ended up going the opposite direction and that's when I became a believer. Great times.

The 79010 headers are the only long tube version I know of that
fits the pre-'69 100/200 series 2wd Sweptline. :study The '69-'71
cross member is a transmission member.... not a bell housing
member, as is the case with the pre-'69 100/200 series Sweptlines.

The Ram 5.2/5.9 headers will work on our trucks? Wow that looks like the way to go!
