NP 435 input shaft seal

There does not appear to be an input shaft seal on my 65 NP435 4 speed. Normal ? I pulled the front bearing housing and there is no place for a seal in front of the input shaft ball bearing. There is an oil drain hole that allows oil to flow back to gear box when it gets past bearing. I also have 67 NP 435 with a tapered roller bearing input shaft and it does have a seal. Any comments ?

It is very common for early standard transmissions to not have a front seal. If they don't, they will usually be a spiral cut where the seal would be so that oil gets channelled back toward the trans. The big thing to remember is not to overfill it, about 1/2 " below the fill hole when cold. The 66 435 I pulled apart recently doesn't have a front seal.

I just rebuilt the NP435 in my '65, ball bearing style. There is not a seal for the input shaft. It was odd to me, but I guess that's how they were back then.
