3.54 rear end

Post by HJS »

One of these days I'll put the whole story of this truck up but until then here is my question. My truck is a 70 and has 3.54 gears for the rear end, and I've seen a few 3.55s, but no other 3.54s. So are 3.54 gears out there? Are they a common for a 3/4 ton?

I'm not positive but I believe the 3.54's are common for the Dana's. The 3.55's are found primarily in the 8 3/4 housings.

So what's wrong with setting beneath a single pull string incandescent light bulb writing angry letters?

I think 4.1 gears are more common in these.

I have parted a few 69/79 D200 and they were 4:10. A number of W200 driven or parted from 66 through 78 and all with 4:10. Even My 96 Cummins powered 3500 is 4:10 Dana 80/60. Only truck I have had with 3:54 is my 83 W200. Might be a geographical thing. Really BIG Mountains in B.C. :thinking :thinking
My truck is younger than me.

I own/owned/parted more than 100 trucks. 90% or more of the Dana 60's were 4.10. Really only recall one that was 3.54, but allowing for benefit of the doubt.

MadMC63 is correct. 3.55 is a Chrysler 8.75" ratio, 3.54 is Dana. The others are also correct, 4.10 is the more/most common for the Dana.

I've parted out and worked on at least 50 Dana 60/70 and 80's all were 3.54 except one set was a 4.10. On my crew cab build I looked for a 4.10 set for nearly a year before giving up. Weird how geographics would affect gear ratios

I can't speak for Dana 80's, nor 70's later than the pre-74 4.88 ones, but I'm with PwrWgnDrvr. Show me a 61-93 D/W200 truck (gas) with a 60 rear & I'd be 90% confident it'd have a 4.10

Yes. The 3.54 seemed to be more common towards the end of the Lifestyle era, when the diesels were introduced. And I have mainly dealt with gas V8 200 series trucks made during 72-79.
