Transmission?

Post by HJS »

I have 1970 D200 is a 383 with a 4 speed. Data plate says it has a NP445 transmission. I bought a small block truck for parts and noticed it had an NP435. My question is did big block trucks have different transmission styles?

The '69-'71 D200/W200 big block trucks came with 727 LoadFlites, NP435s & NP445s.
I'm not sure if I've ever come across one with an A230 3spd manual..... :thinking
I believe your NP445 is a close ratio tranny that is synchro'd down into 1st gear? ...
Someone will correct me if that's not the case. :study

Yes, that's the case. AWESOME tranny!
I have one in a 70 W100 SWB, 383. And another behind a 383 out of a 70 W200 crew.

If the small block truck you bought for parts has a pre-'69 NP435 in it, the input shaft
will be 10 spline as opposed to the 23 spline input shaft on your NP445. :study :Thumbsup

So if my NP445 is in need of rebuilding and my NP435 works, will I have to move the cross member forward?

No, it mounts exactly the same, if it is a 69-71 435. Otherwise, u got problems.
If u like the way the 445 shifts and the ratios, u will hate the 435.
