Three on the tree to 5 speed?

Post by PunisherD100 »

I've got a 68d100 with a three in tree behind a 318. I want to swap the 3 speed for a 5 speed. Anyone know what transmission would pair up nicely with the 318? Any help would be great. Thanks

Nv3500 from a 90's Dodge 1500. I have done an Nv4500 swap behind my LA 340 but the Nv3500 is cheaper and more commonly found in a wrecking yard. Both transmissions are 5 speed with overdrive.

Powerman, would the NV3500 bolt up to his hydraulic bell?

The nv3500 has an integral bellhousing so it does not need the bellhousing. It is a light duty trans for the Dodge Dakota and 1500s. It would require removal of the current bellhousing and crossmember with fabrication of a new crossmember for mounting at the rear of the transmission.

Thanks! I did not know that.

Do the 4500 & other "modern" 5 speeds also have integral bellhousings?

The NP540 is the 5 speed that Dodge offered back in the 60's/70's, but the OP wouldn't gain anything but more low gears.

So what would I do about a clutch pedal assembly. Would the Dakota one work on my truck? Or will I have to go aftermarket?

The NV3500 has a hydraulic actuated clutch, just use the existing pedal/master from your truck and adapt the line to the slave for the NV3500. Another interesting option that I have considered is the Getrag 236 six speed used after 2005. I found one locally but don't currently have the cash to pull the trigger.

Does it matter if the nv3500 is from a 6 cylinder Dakota or a v8? I've located one from a 95' with a 6 cylinder

Nope. 3.9 /5.2/5.9 all have same bolt pattern on back of block.
My truck is younger than me.

Ok so I found a 98' Dakota on Craigslist with a five speed. Guy says the glove box sticker reads DDQ Aisin five speed. After doing some research it seems as though the nv3500 would read DDC. Anyone know if this is correct?

Aisin AX15, According to the parts manuals it was available pre-1999 in Dakotas. There were 3 transmissions available that time frame:

DDK = NV1500 5 Speed Manual
DDQ = Aisin 5 Speed Manual (AX15)
DDC = NV3500 5 Speed Manual

The 4WD version of the AX15 holds up decently in Jeeps with swapped in SBC's, it wouldn't necessarily be a bad choice.

The Jeep/Dodge AX15 5-speed, the Jeep NV3550 5-speed, the Jeep NV1500, the Toyota R150F, R151F & R155F, the 87-92 Toyota Supra Turbo R154, the Isuzu AR5 and the Pontiac Solstice\Saturn Sky\Chevy Colorado\ GMC Canyon MA5 5-speeds all share the same case to bellhousing bolt pattern (Large Pattern)

The input shaft lengths vary with application but some swapping can be accomplished.
Here is some 'family' info:
AX5 = 7.5"
AX15 = 7.875"
Pre 1995 R150\R151 = 6.5"
1996 up Toyota R series = 7.5"
87-92 Turbo Supra R154 = 7.25"
Toyota W series = 6.5"
Toyota G series = 6.5"
AR5 = 8.2"
MA5 = 8.2"
NV3550 = 7.875"
NV1500 = 8.6"
