3 speed to 4 speed

Post by 71swept777 »

Hey there,

Was wondering if anyone could help me identify this trans. Or what it was out of.

Truck was a 3 on tree. Someone switched it to 3 on the floor. This 4speed was included with purchase - and thinking about swapping it out. Any help/advice would be helpful. I know I'll need to shorten driveshaft too.

RP 833 8 7 85

Pretty sure it's RP. Thanks!

This is what I was told it had for gears.

Overdrive (mid-1970s and newer). gears below.

1st 3.09
2nd 1.67
3rd 1.00
4th 0.73

I think the 8 7 85 is the 10000 day calendar number.

Basically wanna know if anyone has made this switch and what I should expect. Thanks again!

Sounds like its a A833OD. Its the same 4 -speed that was put in RoadRunners & such but with totally different gears & I believe an aluminum case/tailhousing. I have read that the countershaft/cluster gear is the weak link.

I agree, sounds like an Overdrive A833. Not a bad transmission, but not as reliable as the original non-OD A833's, from what I've read. I have a standard non-OD A833 in mine (which also started life with a 3 on the tree) that has been very reliable, and it's really nice to cruise along at 60-65 and only be turning 2200 or so.

If its non OD, then the eng rpm will be no different than any other non OD trans. They're all 1:1 (direct drive) in high gear.

The A833OD can be reliable if it is used as intended, and that's for cruising. It's an economy transmission, not performance. It is not made for racing or towing nor for high horsepower or heavy loads.

Well the trans I have in there now which I believe is original revs high in 3rd and doesn't like downshifting until almost stopped. Clutch seems to be getting worse too - so I'm thinking on making the switch.
