Engine oil Rotella ?

Post by 1surfer »

I have a 1968 W100.

I read a topic a while back and someone was suggesting running Shell Rotella in a Dodge gasoline engine.

In a 1971 era 360 with about 8,000 miles on it, would that be a good choice ?

I live a a ski area at almost 10,000' asl and its cold a lot.

Any other suggestions ?

Valvoline 10W-30 conventional oil & Wix filter. Maybe step up to 10W-40 in Summer.

Thanks. I loved the Royella in my 7.3 power stroke. Just wondering why someone would recommend it for my gas dodge.

You need good oil with extreme pressure additives for standard tappet style camshafts. A diesel oil is one way to get that protection. The new gasoline oils are designed for roller lifter style camshafts since all recently produced gas engines have roller lifters.the newer gasoline oils have caused major problems with older engines camshafts/lifters scuff wear. Ask the camshaft producers and machine shop guys, they had a HUGE problem starting about 10 years ago.You can thank the greenies and the federal government for the constant changes in oils....

I just changed the oil and antifreeze in my 66 W100. Motor was a fresh rebuild about 15 years ago and has only had 15/40 in it in that time. Probably hasn't got 5000 miles in that time.
Lifter scrub/wear on cam will not be tolerated :banghead due to 10/30 oil crap.
My truck is younger than me.

The last 318 I had the machine work done on the machine shop suggested I run Rotella in it. The reason why is because it still has Zinc in it which the older flat tappet motors need. I recently read that Rotella no longer has the Zinc in it as well. Maybe run a Zinc additive. I'm no expert just a few things I have read..

This is a customer of mine....

I use their vintage motor oil in my old
vehicles. There are a lot of private blenders
out there that still make flat tappet friendly
motor oil. Most oils you buy in parts stores
have all been blended without zinc. :2cents
