Was driving Ol' Green ('71 W200, 360 ci, 435 4-spd) on a 300 mile highway trip Friday and began climbing a mountain pass , but she didn't seem to want to go. Engine revved higher, but she went slower... pushed in clutch, then released and could tell she was slipping bad. Rode the the clutch a bit and she grabbed; completed the trip (another 20 miles, it was night). No other issues or noises or anything noticed.
Looked this morning, and I've got a lot of stinky gear oil all over the clutch and bellhousing area. Drove it around slowly a bit today, no issues.
Front seal? Other thoughts?
Bigger question... think I can I make it 300 miles back home (Helena to Billings, MT) Sunday without really screwing up something?
Have another 435 at home.

Front seal or rear main on engine. If you try going back make sure both are full. And take a little extra hope there are no big mountains.I would make sure lower flywheel cover drain hole is cleared out to avoid buildup.
I'm experiencing a similar issue. Thought the gear oil was leaking out of the front of the transmission but upon further inspection determined engine oil was leaking out of the rear of the motor. Guessing this is my rear main seal on the old Poly.... Leaking all over clutch slave cylinder, flywheel cover, etc.... I've checked the levels to ensure I'm not running it dry when I do drive it and this appears to be a fairly straightforward seal replacement given the fact that one doesn't have to pull the engine or tranny to replace.
Has anyone does this repair that can add some insight? I have a '66 Town Wagon with a 318 Poly and 4-speed tranny.
