Poly 318? Maybe!!

Post by thembsnyder »

Guys

I need some help. I was told my truck had a Poly 318 but I cannot verify with the casting number that I found. I know it is a poly but need some help.

The casting number I found is 2284370.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

What year is your truck? The easiest way to tell is by the valve covers - if the bottom edge is scalloped, it's a poly; smooth, it's the later LA-318.

If it aint' broke..., I probably haven't fiddled with it.

Also, poly valve covers are held on with 2 bolts, one each end, thru the top. LA are held on with several, around the edges.
Poly head exhaust ports are this pattern: O O O O
LA ports are this: O OO O

Guys

Yes it is a poly 318. The valve covers are scalloped and have the bolts on the ends.

I am more wondering if it actually a 318 but I cannot find the casting number on any references.

The year and cu.in. will be stamped on the front left cylinder rail right where the head meets the block. There is a machined surface there with a stamped engine id on it.
A casting number will not be specific to year only a range of years.
