Building power!?

Post by schmitt »

Guy I've been driving my new to me 69 d100, what a blast so far.

I'm looking to build some more power. The thing screams mid range and on top but seems to be dead down low.

Should I be adding HP or maybe some different gearing? Looking for some more low end ( want the tires to light lol)

What stall torque converter do you have in it? :thinking What cam are you running?
Has the engine been bored? Have the heads been re-worked? New pistons?... :thinking
You could look for a 4.10 sure grip for the Dana.... but your top end will come down a
bit. :2cents

You could put on some shorter tires.
I sold all of my sweptline trucks, except the invisible one. I just couldn't stand to see it go!

Thanks fellas.
Engine is stock besides the listed mods
Not sure on the converter?

I find that bigger tires are better depending on your setup the truck has on it. personally I would do bigger for the fact you dont spin the motor faster burning more fuel($2.63 a Gallon as of today 7/32/15) in my area and I'm 30 miles from any gas station.

To be honest I'm not worried about mpg. Just looking to make power

I don't get on the hwy all to much so I would much rather have good Low end and still cruise 65 if need be

I know a good all around tire that is cheap is a 235-75-R15 LT tires that roll easily and have a good ride, or the 235-75-15 P tires if you want to be buying lots of passenger ply tires IMO.

That torque converter is 1800-2000 Rpm. I could go to the TCI breakaway and be at 2400-2600rpm?

Also thinking edlebrock performer rpm heads
Maybe swapping to the edlebrock performer rpm intake as well? (I have the Weiand action plus now) Not sure if brand matching is better?
comp cams roller rockers
Could use advice on cam too.

Thanks for all advice

If you can't light it up with that combo, something is not right.
Poor low end power can be caused by to large a throttle body or high rpm range cam or single plane intakes can also cause poor low-end performance.
Your convertor sounds like a good rpm range, keep in mind to add 500 rpms of stall to the rated stall of any convertor for a big block or diesel.

Are you running the throttle body setup or TPI?
How many cfm is the throttle body good for?
What cam are you running?
Is the intake a single or dual plane?
What type of headers?

That rpm range is quoted for big block.

wieand action plus Medium Rise/Dual Plane

The fast easy Efi uses throttle body injection

I can't seem to find a brand stamp on the headers at all

I believe it's a stock built motor besides the bolt ons.

Thanks

Check this out, it might be your intake. Sounds like that intake has a poor low rpm design.

Thanks swptln

Maybe time to try out the edlebrock rpm performer intake? Then I can put the matching heads on this winter.

I've done some research on the weiand intake and they seem to have good reviews.

I'm really up in the air on how to start on this thing, tare it all down and start over or just keep adding parts. I know for sure I want to be making more power.

If your motor is built to roadrunner spec's, those cars were pretty quick with 3:23 gears, a 625cfm carb, roadrunner cam, iron intake and iron manifolds.
A friend of mine had a bone stock 69 roadrunner, 727, 3:23 gears posi, AVS 4bbl, it would turn low 13's in the quarter with no problems.
I think I would spec the camshaft to see what it is first, then throw a stock iron manifold on it and re-tune your EFI and go from there.
Here are the spec's for a Roadrunner cam:
P445278AC
Advert. Dur. 268/284.
Dur. @ .050 228/241.
46 degree overlap.
115 degree centerline.
Lift .450/.458.
RPM idle to 5800
Valve Spring P36900933.
