Leaking shift shaft seal A745

Post by my5thmopar »

I found some fluid on the ground today and it seems to be coming from the shift shaft seal on the levers. It would have to leak after the cab is back on. :banghead Anyway...are there any tips getting those out without removing and rebuilding transmission. I'm thinking a small allen wrench or maybe a small hole and screw. I've never worked on one so I could use some suggestions. Thanks Craig

Should be pretty easy fix. Remove the 2 shift arms at the trans.. You can use a dental pic to remove the 2 seals. I think Rockauto has them, you might find them locally. :thinking

anymore suggestions?
I've got a Lisle tool for this, which should work if they're not too stuck.
Only risk looks like damaging the shaft where the seal rides. Thinking about trying to slip a piece of plastic between the shaft and seal before inserting the tool.

I'll report back, in case this might help someone else.
working on my back with the trans installed, I wanted all the help I could get.
here is the tool I used:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/09vw2xhws2to0 ... l.pdf?dl=0.

it took me a while to get everything set up, as far as where to position the handle and what kind of "spacer" to use between the silver part of the tool and the trans case. once that figured out, it went pretty well.

on the seal that was leaking, I could get a piece of plastic (middle of a coke bottle) between the shaft and the tool.
on the other seal (not leaking), the plastic went in fine, but then I couldn't get to tool in. Someone with stronger hands probably no trouble.

had to hit the end of the handle with 3 lb hammer several times, but each seal came out in 1 piece. Again, stronger hands probably don't need a hammer.

used a big washer and a socket to intsall.
so far no leaks.
