68 D100, hydraulic clutch A833 O/D conversion

I picked up an A833 overdrive from an 83 dodge truck a few weeks ago and plan to swap it into my 68 D100 to replace the original 3 speed. I drive it a lot and the overdrive would be nice to have, I don't pull a car trailer very often so I think it will hold up ok since I am only running a 318 right now. I would like to keep the factory hydraulic clutch slave cylinder just to make it an easy swap. so I made up a bracket to bolt to the driver side of the A833 bellhousing. I mocked it up on the 4 speed bellhousing and used 1/2" plate to make the bracket. its not pretty but I think it will work. I had to mount the slave cylinder with the bolts facing away from the bellhousing so that the bleeder would be facing up and not down, it would have been easier to mount it with the bleeder facing down and the bolts facing the bellhousing but I figured it would be hard to bleed the air out.

now I need to make up a transmission mount crossmember.
my flywheel should be here Thursday so I hope to swap it in this weekend if everything goes as planned. but that almost never happens .

Don't you think that thin 1/2 stock is going to bend? I like to see some garage engineering at work. Do you think there is enough throw to engage the throw out arm? Nice job, let us know how it works. Craig

A buddy of mine did that very conversion 10 years ago in his 66 D100. Worked out very well. His slave bracket was different but worked.

I got everything bolted up and went for a test drive. it worked out pretty good. having the overdrive makes it a lot nicer to drive at interstate speeds.
it did end up being a little more work than I planned on. I didn't plan on having to cut the crossmember under the bellhousing but there is no way this A833 would have fit with it there. I may still make something there to bolt in just for extra strength but I don't know if it really needs . there is another crossmember at the end of the transmission tailshaft that I did not have to remove and I also added a bolt in crossmember for the transmission tailshaft mount.
the other thing I didn't plan on was having to cut the transmission tunnel for the shifter. the tunnel was not wide enough for it to clear and I had to make a hump similar to the one like the cars have like the dart and cuda but only for the shifter, the shifter rods cleared.
I also used the original driveshaft, the transmission ended up about 3/4" shorter than the 3 speed when it is bolted up to the motor so it would have been nice if my driveshaft was a little longer, I might look for a longer one but I didn't have any vibrations so I figured that was a good sign.
the clutch slave cylinder worked real good, the only problem I had was trying to drill a hole in the clutch fork for the pin , I could not get any of my drill bits to do anything. I don't know what they make them out of, there was a little surface rust on it and it was magnetic so I know it was not stainless. I ended up cutting the end off my original fork and welding it to my new one so I could have the hole for the pin that I need for the slave cylinder to connect . the old clutch fork was not exactly the same and would not work with this transmission.
I never noticed that the starter was different on these trucks until now , I pulled one of an old slant 6 I had and it worked.

here is the crossmember I made. it just bolts to the bottom of the frame.

Now if you want you can bolt in a newer hi torque style starter.

Great work Kenny. I don't know how you get so much done. :clap Looking forward to seeing it at Carlisle... I assume. :salut

Its been 3 years and it still works great! The only thing that might make it easier would be to buy a hydraulic clutch kit from somewhere like wilwood and use a hydraulic throwout bearing. Then you would not have to make brackets up and modify the factory setup.

I have a 65 d100 short bed that I am putting the same transmission in. Could you post a pick of the cross member with the transmission installed. It would be greatly appreciated.

i just made a simple crossmember out of rectangle tube for the mount. The hydraulic slave cylinder has worn out again. i think it might be time to come up with something better than the factory set up . i might try a wilwood hydraulic assembly.

Have you tried a stainless lined slave cylinder yet? :thinking

No I have not tried a stainless lined slave cylinder. Where can you get that done? I normally have to rebuild mine about every 3 years. But I drive it a lot. It works but I can't hold the clutch pedal down very long now before the pressure leaks off and the clutch engages.

Slave on my 66 W100 was OEM new back about 2001/2. I only drive my truck a few times a year and it still works. :thinking :thinking :thinking

You hit the lottery on that slave.

I haven't started on mine yet but, here are two thoughts. 1) If the cylinder is easier to mount with the bleeder down then, extend it with a line and turn it up. 2) I bought the slave for a 1985 or so, A883 truck that I'm going to see if I can adapt since its made for my bell housing. my :2cents Craig
