Found the drive shaft bell ringing, how to fix?

Post by my5thmopar »

64 Ute with /6. I found the noise I'm hearing when driving. It it the drive shaft. The truck did not have a bed floor when I got the truck. Maybe I won't hear the noise when I get the bed floor in. The video is about one minute long. At the end of the video you can hear the noise. Suggestions please! Copy the link, I don't know how to link but scroll down Photobucket and you will see the video.

Wrap it in tape and see if it goes away.

From the video, seems as if you can shake the drive shaft....it should be tight when attached. Sounds like you need new u-joints. :2cents :thinking

It does get quieter and doesn't ring as bad when you hit the shaft.

Not sure what you mean???

U joints seem to be tight. I can hold the pinion or trans yoke and twist the drive shaft. The joints don't move however like you can see in the video there is a lot of play in the entire assembly. It may be the trans and diff are just worn.

Anyway, thanks for the suggestions and keep them coming. Craig

The backlash on the trans and diff actually don't seem to be really outrageous. The drive shaft tube can ring when hit. I am guessing it rings as you drive? Is it random or does it do it all the time?

Doesnt ring under load, acceleration, only when letting off gas and stuff is slack.

Even though the u-joints may feel good you may want to look at them. I am guessing if you downshift the ringing stops as well? If yes then the shaft is getting some sort of chatter from either the trans of the diff. Nailing that down could be a chore. It may even be in the slip joint.
