8.75 vent

How does the little cap on the vent come off and how can one tell if the vent is working?

The cap is crimped on. You should be able to wiggle it off the vent tube.
If the tube is free of any obstructions and the cap is properly installed, the
vent is working.

Make sure and clean the vent bolt with brake cleaner good. It will plug up with grease over years of use. Test it out when its out of the rear. Blow in it. Cap is crimped on and meant to stay on all the time. These vents will get plugged up.

Mine leaks. I am pretty suer they are the same as car 8-3/4 vents but need to double check..... if so they are available new.

I believe this is common on most Mopars - it certainly is on my 71 D-100 (with 8.75 axle)...

The vent screws into the axle housing, and retains the rear axle brake line splitter. Both appear to be made of brass.
Google "Mopar axle vent", or eBay search, to see a picture of the vent.

Unscrew, blow through... If air passes, it's working.
(btw - this is how water can enter the axle when going through deep water, some attach a hose to this vent and run it up above the frame for 4-wheeling)

well, that explains that :idea
cleaned out the brake splitter a couple of weeks ago without removing
ever since then, been wondering, "why in the world does a brake system need a vent?" :withstupid
guess that tells you the kind of ?s I'll be asking
