Bellhousing question - 318 Poly to 440

Post by 70DartMike »

My 65 Fargo originally had a 383. At some point it was pulled, and a 318 Poly was installed. The truck still has the NP 4 speed.

My question is will the bellhousing on my 318 Poly bolt on to a 440 I have? Or do I need a big block belhousing?

The 383 wasn't used in trucks until 67.

Sorry, I'm calling it a 65 just to give it something. It's titled as a 71, but has an early box, early cab/hood, etc. its really just a mix match of parts.

361/413 big blocks appeared in the medium duty trucks before the 383 appeared in the 100-300 series. Not sure if they all used same bell.

You'll need to confirm that this '71[?] has a tail shaft mount cross member
or a bell housing mount cross member. If it is definitely a '71, you'll need
to find the proper MECHANICAL clutch bell housing with corresponding BB
flywheel. :study :2cents

For Sweptlines, its tough just to "give it something" with regards to the
year of manufacture as there were many design changes throughout the
Sweptline years. :Thumbsup As these vehicles have been around for decades,
paperwork [VIN information] can sometimes get screwed up. Post your VIN
number as it appears on the truck's frame and we can verify what you have.
Photos can help too.

BB bell housings are the same from pick ups to the large series 361/413 trucks. If its a bell housing/frame mount style it can be used in . I currently have a BB bell housing from a pick up behind a 400 cubic inch in a D 500 using a 318 p/u flywheel rebalanced for the 400. Big block starters are mounted differently than the 318/SL6 starters. Nose cone is different. The guts are the same.
