D500-D600 rearend info

Post by cudacustoms1 »

I am looking for a rearend that I was told came out of a 58-71 dodge D500-D600. It is a rockwell rear. H140 model. 6.17 ratio. Again I was told that it came out of theses truck but I would really like to here from some one that really has one. If you know of one of these rears please let me know we are haveing a really hard time finding one. Or if you could confirm what these came out of that would that would be great. 608 485 0760 chad

While I cant say for sure wbout the D series, I do know this. The 74-77 W600 trucks had two rears offered. If the truck had a Dana 70 front, the rear was I believe Rockwell F147 & ratio 6.17. If the W600 had a Rockwell FDS75 front then the rear was H141 with 6.80 gears.

Pre 74 W500 should have 6.8 geared H141 rear.

Yes 6.17 gears were available in D series medium duty (500-800) & possibly S series school buses.

I have 2 H141 rears, both 6.8 geared

I think the only difference between F147 & H141 is the ratio, housing probably the same.

Here is some info on their front drive axles. Perhaps Meritor, which bought out Rockwell I think, has info somewhere on their rear axles too.

http://www.sweptline.org/SweptlineRegis ... FK2J506422 This truck appears to have a similar ratio.

I might know where one is but at this point I can't confirm much. There is a 1971 Dodge bus at a salvage yard and I have the VIN plate sitting on my shelf at home. I was looking at the plate and noticed that it had 2 gear ratios listed. One of them was 6.1(it didn't have hundreths listed). This could have the correct axle.

If I remember to look I could find out more but the VIN plate probably doesn't have the axle model, or maybe it does. I'll try to bring it to work tomorrow.

You could also call Doug's 4 Wheelers(641) 628-2755 and see if they could tell you any information about the axle to verify if it is the correct axle.

I have found a 71 d500 grain truck. 318/4speed. It has rockwell rear but the ID tags are gone. The owner said we could tear it down for inspection if we put it all together again. It's alot of work out in a feild in 30 degree weather if its not it. I was told the h141 is the same other than carrier bearing. The ring and pinion is supose to interchange. I have looked on the avin meritor site but can't find h-series info. I have info on alot of the others but no H140.This would also be a single speed rear.

Is there really an H140? My books only show H141.

The F147 is the one (in Dodges) that had the 6.17 ratio and 13.25 ring gear diameter. It came in D600, S600 and the W600's with Dana 70 fronts.

There was recently a W600 in Hennessey, Oklahoma for sale that had 6.17 gears.

I have talked to 30+ different yards/rebuilders and the h140 is a real rear. No one can tell me what it came in because rockwell rears were used in so many different things. That is why I came on this forum to ask you guys who have these trucks. Which I love this body style of truck. My next project is a sweptline 4wd.I did find a few ring and pinion sets thru my diging but new was any where from $2800 to $4300. I finally just bought a used cener from A&A truck salvage in NJ. They are the same guy's with the pile of F106's on ebay. I know a couple of puller's that have bought from them before and were happy with there purchase. Thanks for the help guys. I have been really impressed with the help this site has given me. Thanks again

It sounds like you found something.

I checked the VIN plate for the bus and it was an Eaton.

Wow $2800-up for ring/pinion, I hope I never tear anything up on mine. Maybe I should keep my stock toothpick driveshaft as a drivetrain shear pin.

The crazy price is becuse of it not being a comon rear. Long story short I was told it was a sqhd rear. I had bought a brand new ring and pinion for that for $320. That is when we started to find out how many different rockwell rears there are. The same company that sold me that R&P wanted $3300 for the H140.

SQHD rear axles were very common in older class 8 trucks. Not sure about a 6:17 ratio though. The only rigs I drove and know had 6 something ratios were a trio of '72 Diamond Reos with double OD 13 speeds. As I recall most of them back then were 5:29's.

I had to look up SQHD. I came across this:

http://www.vsm.skf.com/en-US/HeavyDuty/ ... _DIFF.ashx

I still don't see any listing for an H140 but page 6 has a breakdown of model numbers and their designations. Page 15 has a H141 listed.

I also found this: http://www.heavytruckparts.net/detailvi ... 98&store=1
