Vibration Dampener
Vibration Dampener
Is there some ancient Chinese secret to getting this off, or do you just have to use an impact on it? Getting the block ready for the hot tank, and that is stopping me!!!!
Re: Vibration Dampener
Last time I did one of those I used a steering wheel puller.Removed washer from the crank bolt, spun it back in as a support for the center bolt of puller.

Re: Vibration Dampener
Correction-use a Harmonic Balancer Puller, available for rent from most major auto parts stores. Jim

Mine is similar to this one. It's a cheap enough tool to have in your garage.
Even comes with me to the dismantling emporium(aka junkyard).

Re: Vibration Dampener
I guess I should have been a little more specific, to get the bolt out
Re: Vibration Dampener
I use a chain wrench (around the balancer) and the correct socket with an impact driver.
Re: Vibration Dampener
That's a good way to destroy it.If you have to block the crank from turning stick a bar into the flex plate.HellBelly wrote:I use a chain wrench (around the balancer) and the correct socket with an impact driver.

I disagree, I've removed them this way many times. I'm not torquing down on the balancer just holding it in place while i run the air impact to loosen the bolt?ufo wrote:That's a good way to destroy it.If you have to block the crank from turning stick a bar into the flex plate.HellBelly wrote:I use a chain wrench (around the balancer) and the correct socket with an impact driver.
Re: Vibration Dampener

Re: Vibration Dampener

Re: Vibration Dampener
I bought a Kobalt 1/2" impact a few years back. Piece of junk, doesnt have the balls of a breaker bar, even with 150 PSI & 80 gal tank.Enon wrote:The impact isn't doing anything to it at all!!!!
Not all impacts are "capable"....... same goes for air compressors.

Pull a spark plug and feed a bunch of rope down the hole, then turn engine over until the piston is squeezing rope into head and she stops turning. Alternatively if it's a manual trans, put it in top gear and set the parking brake TIGHTLY!
Next take your socket and a breaker bar (a piece of pipe to extend it can help here) and give 'er a good pull. It should come out pretty easily once it starts moving.

Re: Vibration Dampener
The block is sitting on any engine stand right now, waiting for that to come off :(
Re: Vibration Dampener
Finally got the bolt. A lot of heat and impact wrenching got it.
