Vibration Dampener

Post by Enon »

Is there some ancient Chinese secret to getting this off, or do you just have to use an impact on it? Getting the block ready for the hot tank, and that is stopping me!!!!

Last time I did one of those I used a steering wheel puller.Removed washer from the crank bolt, spun it back in as a support for the center bolt of puller.

Correction-use a Harmonic Balancer Puller, available for rent from most major auto parts stores. Jim

Mine is similar to this one. It's a cheap enough tool to have in your garage.
Even comes with me to the dismantling emporium(aka junkyard).

I use a chain wrench (around the balancer) and the correct socket with an impact driver.

That's a good way to destroy it.If you have to block the crank from turning stick a bar into the flex plate.

I disagree, I've removed them this way many times. I'm not torquing down on the balancer just holding it in place while i run the air impact to loosen the bolt?

I bought a Kobalt 1/2" impact a few years back. Piece of junk, doesnt have the balls of a breaker bar, even with 150 PSI & 80 gal tank.

Not all impacts are "capable"....... same goes for air compressors.

Pull a spark plug and feed a bunch of rope down the hole, then turn engine over until the piston is squeezing rope into head and she stops turning. Alternatively if it's a manual trans, put it in top gear and set the parking brake TIGHTLY!
Next take your socket and a breaker bar (a piece of pipe to extend it can help here) and give 'er a good pull. It should come out pretty easily once it starts moving.
