Intake Question

Post by 1969IndianaDodgeMan »

I am looking at ordering a new intake, but am not positive that it will work with my engine, and wanted to get some advice before I sink the time and money into it. I have an A318 poly, and was looking at the Edelbrock 2176 intake. Thoughts? I appreciate any and all help and advice.

Sir

I may be "preaching to the choir" .

The 1958 - 1962 used OEM 4 bbl Manifold's are slightly over-price
at $350 to $500 used.

The 1962 to 1966'ish After Market units are at the same prices.

To me this is a "little high" for some Bragging Rights.

The unit you are looking at is more for the La-340 or LA-360 sized engine.
If placed on a LA-318 Wedge the manifold to head ports don't match
very good. You have the A-318.

I do not believe Edelbrock made a 4 barrel intake for the poly. The options are either a factory cast iron or Weiand #7503 for a single 4 barrel intake. Both are hard to come by.

Are you sure? Your truck would have had the LA318 from the factory.

I know the engine has been replaced in the truck, it is not the factory 318 that is in it. I will get the casting numbers off the block (provided I can find them), but I am fairly certain based on the spark plug orientation that it is the poly.

Where will I find the casting codes, or how can I identify if it is a A318, or an La318, and what is the difference?

Easiest way to tell an A318 from an LA318 is by looking at the valve covers. If yours have 4 ripples on the outside of the valve cover (exhaust side) you've got an A318 LA 318 valve covers are straight on that edge.

Thanks Sterno. I wish my engine looked as nice as either of those! So LA318 here?

So what are the advantages or differences of the LA318?

Yup you got a LA318.
Advantages are there are a lot of parts available and those parts are not going to drain your wallet.
There are some port mismatch if you get a 340-360 intake without using the larger motor's heads as well.

Poly 318 headers $600
LA 318 Headers $200
Poly 318 Aluminum 4v intake $450
LA 318 Aluminum Intake $125
Now the rebuild is something else too.......twice as much for a Poly 318!
But for a wow factor I like the Poly, there just aren't allot of them out there. In my 65 I am keeping the Poly in it and putting in a modern auto/overdrive and fuel injection. Just to be different and nostalgic! I have a cast factory 4v manifold for the Poly.....anything is available for a price! They come up on Ebay and go for over $400 for every one I have seen on there. I sold a 2x4v on Ebay and it went for over $500 and that one had a crack in it!

Seff

The LA-273, LA-318, LA-340, LA-360 and the V-10 is a "Spin off" of the A-318.

If you layed out the Engine Parts Of the LA Series in a Column and layed the same
parts of the A-318 in another column ( with enough room to walk between them )
so that like parts are next to each other you would be surprised.

The main non-matching parts are:
Exhaust Manifolds
Pistons
Valve Covers
Heads ( bare/stripped )
Cam Shaft
Rocker Arm Assembly
and spoken about already is the Intake Manifold

Now back to your engine and what is in the new box. Measure the Intake Port
size of your Heads. Measure the Intake Port size of the Manifold in the box.
Even though the bolt holes and etc match, ... the larger port diameter of the
manifold that is in the box is a "bottle neck" to your Heads.

Thanks for all of the input on the LA318; I am certainly at the beginning of my learning curve on this particular engine.

So thoughts from the group on switching to a 4brl intake and carb? Is it worth it? Is there a setup that you have found to work better than others?

I appreciate the help and the way everyone has welcomed me to the group.

The Intake that matchs with no problems is the Factory Unit that came
with some LA-273's. It is the second series design that matches to your
LA-318.

The Fractory Unit used in the early 80's is truely a LA-360 unit that has the same
performance problems already spoken of. Even so some use it any way.

If you drive your 318 powered truck with the flow of the average driver the
400 CFM 4 Brl Carb is the best. If you drive your 318 Powered truck as if
you are wanting to deliver a warm pizzia the larger CFM's can be sold to
you.

For a person that drive's the truck as if it is OK to stay with the flow of
traffic on the Inter-State, the 400 CFM four barrel carburator is very good.

Ask around and many others will inform you of the items that will help you
before you purchase the manifold and carb units.

Thanks Roger and Gabby,

I am looking more for daily driving - I don't really have the lead foot problem. Sounds like maybe a 400 would be the way to go.

You might get better fuel mileage with a 4 barrel due to the smaller primaries unless you drive around using all 4 barrels.

I was leaning towards the 4 barrel, just have the question of which manifolds will work with the engine, or be best.

I'm curious to know what 4 bbl carb you go with. I have a 450 cfm economaster that I have a love hate relationship with. I love the cfm, and I can still get rebuild kits but not the metric jets or choke diaphragms.
