Will this tranny work?

Post by TruckStupe »

I currently have the four speed granny w/a 318 in a 3/4 ton 2wd, and found a deal on a non-granny 4 speed that's hard to pass up, if it's not a hassle to match. It's from the next generation though: 1973 Powerwagon Camper Special 1/2 ton "not married to transfer case, uses jack shaft." Can anyone fill me in on whether this is a feasible switch? Thanks!

If your truck has the original tranny and it
is a '68 or earlier.... it'll have a 10 spline
input shaft whereas the later tranny will
have a 23 spline input shaft. :2cents

Sounds like more work than what I'm looking for, then. Thanks so much, John!

The only difference is the clutch disc, wouldn't you put a new clutch in anyway?

that sounds like an a833 style, and i have never heard of one of those being oem supplied on a 4x4. i think they only came on late 70's and early 80's d100's with slant6.

Could be an NP435 with a 4.56 first gear :thinking
Also, possibly an NP445. :study :2cents

Other things to watch for......
-Length of LifeStyle era tranny input shaft vs current equipment
-Length from bell housing to tail shaft yoke [possible drive shaft length differences]
-Difference between 23 spline [mechanical clutch] disc vs 10 spline [hydraulic clutch] disc
[possible disc collar/flywheel issues....]
-Do not attempt to use the later [mechanical clutch] clutch pressure plate on a pre-'69 truck

Man... good info guys; thanks.

Sounds like I may not be able to verify the fit for sure until I drop the current tranny, compare, and even then may need to do some trial and error to make it all mesh? If so, that's gonna be beyond me time-wise at this point.
