where can i get transmission mounts?

Post by essat784 »

I have a 1967 D200 crewcab 4-spd converted to 4x4, and it has a 1971 360 engine in it.

since the truck retains the hydraulic clutch setup, it has the stock 1967 bellhousing. my engine mounts/transmission mounts that hold up this bellhousing are completely worn out, making the truck very annoying to drive - i hear a clunking sound every time i shift.

i have been searching all through napa auto parts, O'Reillys, and Autozone to almost no avail. Napa did not have anything in stock, and the closest thing that Autozone and O'Reilly had was this part number: http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/detai ... yword=2302 this sorta looks like it could work, but i heard the stock style transmission mounts were L-shaped, because mine are. mine also have one bolt going through the top so the bell house can bolt onto it, and they have two small bolts coming out the bottom to bolt onto the cross member. will these work? and if not, where do i get the real, L-shaped mounts?

i cant believe that none of these parts stores are selling this, as well as rockauto and summit racing. i wonder if i could go to a dodge dealership...

Mine is exactly like yours and unless you find NOS, you're out of luck.

SOmeone may have a good used one (try Bud Thorpe) viewtopic.php?f=32&t=25011

You may be able to use the one linked, but you'd have to drill that hole through your crossmember I believe. :thinking

yikes. i didnt realize it was gonna be that rough to find one.

maybe i could find one that wasnt L-shaped that was flat instead that would work? i know its got one big stud going through the top to bolt to the bellhousing, and then theres two smaller bolts that bolt to the crossmember. i think i almost remembered a flat piece like that when i was fishing around through all the auto parts stores in sacramento. i still have yet to check the dealerships and carquest.

I recently said I wasn't going to "post" anymore, but! parts prices are what they are. I will pay whatever it takes to keep my '67 roadworthy. I recently replaced my trans mount/isolator/insulator and found that Dodge used their own style adapter to make their tailshaft mount work. I paid $50.00 for my mount. My thinking is that there may be another (less expensive) mount available. JC Whitney, Jeep series shows one that looks a lot like the flat auto trans mount for 67 Dodge.

i think id rather get a used one than pay $200 for my mounts. i cant justify myself spending that much.

and my truck has the manual transmission. im pretty sure the auto tranny mounts were different. on the 67's and earlier the mount has two small bolts that bolt to the crossmember, and there have one single large stud on top that bolts to the side of the bell housing. and they are L shaped.

Imperial Services mounts, at least the two I used before I found a factory mount, delaminate. The steel plate pulls away from the poly. I managed to find an OEM rubber one and haven't had the problem since (of course, I'm running a beefed up 440 that I'm trying to keep in its installed location -- though I've heard of others who have had the same issue).

Good luck.

This was not for the application being asked for. I needed the mount for an auto. The dealership showed 13 left in the country and that was a few years ago.

those are not my transmission mounts.

my transmission mounts are L-shaped, and have one large stud which attaches to the bellhousing and two smaller bolts which attach the mount to the cross member. i am going to try and take some pictures of them from where they are on my truck. i wish i could find some parts manual or something that had a technical diagram of this mount...

Actually, you are describing the Bell Housing Insulators.
http://www.sweptline.org/engine63_68/i09-0021.html
There is an extensive library of parts diagrams and part
numbers on the Home Page of this site. Your truck, as
originally configured, would have no "transmission mounts"
per say.... The mounting point is the bell housing. I left
a link to some new insulators as offered from Imperial
Services in a previous post. Aside from I.S. .... you'll
have to post an ad in the Parts Wanted section or wind
up getting extremely lucky by finding a pair of NOS
insulators through a dealership parts search [highly
unlikely] , an auto swap meet [possibly] or finding
someone who has bought out NOS items from a now
defunct dealership..... in which case you'd likely spend
more than you would buying them from I.S.. Hope this
helps.....

An additional suggestion for you.....
When placing an ad in the Parts Wanted
section, describe the part[s] as a hydraulic
bell housing rubber insulator mount, as per the
diagram I've supplied you in my previous
post. If you keep calling it a "transmission
mount".... that will be what you'll wind up
with. :2cents :Thumbsup Happy hunting. :clap

I have a friend who owns an auto parts store (independent). I'm trying to convince him that "vintage parts" are the way to go; he's always stocked the basics for my '67 D200. He asked me (18 years ago) to let him know when I sold it so he could liquidate that inventory. Which of the mounts shown in the factory service/parts manual are the "L" shaped trans/bellhousing mount that you are looking for? I've already called him for trans mount 67 D200 4speed, but I doubt that will help him find your "bellhousing" insolator/isolator. Computer access for me is limited; my cell phone is 903 372 9742. hobcobble thanks a ton. i didnt think to check the engine parts in that service manual since i figured they would have been in the transmission section - which is "on hold." I shall refrain from calling them transmission mounts, now that i know that their proper term is insulator. Thank you for your advice.

I am still on the fence regarding imperial services for two reasons. If those mounts delaminate after a while then that wouldnt solve any of my problems, and also I still feel that they are charging way too much. However, if i cant find a better deal i just might have to suck it up and do it.

I'd suggest calling Imperial Services and voicing your concerns
about the insulator de-laminating. See what they say as far as
a guarantee or how they back their product up. I've heard two
reports of the auto-tranny tail-shaft insulator having an issue.
Is this indicative of their entire product line? :thinking .... I
would hope not. Try asking around on the MoParts or Allpar
sites to see how others have fared using parts from I.S..

Regarding the "exorbitant" cost......
I am in an industry that involves producing custom molds/tooling.
I would guess that I.S. invested a "small sum" of $$ to produce tooling
to make the insulators to sell..... how many?..... :thinking a couple
hundred sets?? They have to somehow amortize the cost of that
tool/mold over the number of units they'd hope to sell in a given
period of time..... I don't know about you, but I don't think they're
"bending anyone over" on this item. Assuming they're top quality, I'd
just as soon go for a pair of them as opposed to getting a pair of
used ones that have had a bell housing sitting on them for the past
45 years..... but hey..... that's just me.
