4 Speed Transmission Overdrive

I've been wondering if anyone makes an overdrive for a 4 speed manual in a 71 D200. I've been interested in getting some kind of gas mileage at all.

Do some digging with the search function, this has been discussed at length a few times.

I bought a close-ratio a833 and gear vendors overdrive for mine, but they're not installed yet.

There is no easy option to install an OD a833 unless you have the correct bellhousing.

I found the Gear Vendors on Craigslist for $500. I have to build some brackets to mount it in place of the center support bearing, and find an appropriate input yoke, then get a bearing and seal to make it a stand-alone unit. The complete setup from GV that bolts directly to the back of your transmission is around $2700 new. I plan to install the a833 on my np435 bellhousing, so I'll have to drill some holes and perhaps add some plating to accomodate.

The pilot hole and input shaft are the same from a 23 spline a833 OD transmission, so only the mounting holes have to be sorted.

I've also considered buying a steel bellhousing which fits the transmission, and welding up frame and clutch cylinder mounts. This is probably the easiest way, but a lot more expensive.

Thanks for the advice. I was wondering if it was even possible, but now that you've made mention i think ill look into it. Ive actually been looking at gearvendors for a while but wasn't sure if they had something for my 40 year old truck. Sounds like a lot of work i dont know how to do, or have the money for, so perhaps ill just keep it the way it is for now. Oh btw the truck is for sale for 500 bucks.

No shifter change or drive shaft change.

There's an easier/cheaper way. I'm new to Sweptlines, but not Mopars. I just pulled an 833 out of my 64 Polara with 3:91's because it was TERRIBLE on the freeway, and swapped in an OD 833 I picked up for $50. I had to buy a new 4.8" bearing retainer due to the early bellhousing only having a 4.3" hole. Then I had a machine shop open the bellhousing to match the 4.8" br. Brewersperformance makes an adapter ring in case I have to go back to the standard 833, that's why I did it this way. Cost me $80 for the br, $100 for the machinning, but now the car cruises 2200rpm at 65mph and it's MUCH nicer to drive. I think the truck bellhousings already have a 5.125 br opening, and that's what the OD 833's come standard with, so it could possible be a direct bolt-in with the right parts. I was told the OD 833's weren't strong enough to handle much HP, but the 426 wedge in my Polara is cranking out over 400 HP and I slam it regularly without mercy....so far so good, but it's only been in for about 500 miles. :dance

71's are z-bar correct....I have an 80's small block truck OD833 (which isn't for the 435 style) truck bellhousing if you're interested.
