4 speed Acme T98A

Post by jwing68 »

Just picked up a donor W 100 I believe...badges are missing, looking at the data plate the tranny is a 4 speed Acme T98A haven't run across this particular model myself. I was considering swapping it out for the NP 435 in my W300 since 2nd gear syncro is tired. How about it fellas any comments would be appreciated. jwing8

As far as I can tell the T98A is also called the T98 and was built by Borg Warner. The T98A was the later version from 1955-72. It was used in Fords, Internationals, REOs/Whites and Jeeps. I have no idea why it is in your truck and also why it says Acme.

Not sure what year the donor truck is digdoug...early sixties judging by the quad headlamps, I was suprised as well when I saw this on the data plate soopernaut, hence the query to the forum, I'm hoping the diffs have some good stuff hidden under all that grease. I will capture an image of the data plate for your review and comments fellas hopefully with some help I can decode this unsual data plate.

0k fellas, here is the data plate images and a couple additional...not sure of the year ? I know it is a W100 since it is short wheel base. Please offer your comments on this particular tranny. A side note this truck has the E- brake on the T-Case same as both my W300's. jwing68

That truck looks like a 64 or later w100. Very cool...I have never seen that tranny in a dodge before... What did it use to have for a bed? Was it a brush truck?

Here is a little info from Novac...http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/t98.htm

Thank's digdoug :salut that Novak link is very informative...I am very pleased by this info, sounds like this Borg Warner T98A is a great candidate to transplant into my W300 and by all accounts it is a cut above the NP 435 that is so common. I can hardly wait to get it out for verification! Why do you think Chrysler calls it an "Acme" when in reality it is a Borg Warner ? I have very little history on the truck, a Hutterite colony near my location has used it for the last 20+ years as a mule to haul around an 80 KW Kohler power plant. The last 7 years it has sat dormant and been shot up a bit. I will dig a bit deeper on the history and see what kind of story surfaces.
Many Thank's jwing68

Does the truck have a SERT sticker somewhere below the data plate? If so is there a number and description pertaining to the transmission.

Hello soopernaut...no SERT sticker to be found on this old mule, however out of curiousity I was looking at a D500 cab that I acquired for my 62 Dodge W300 this particular cab came off of a D500 fire truck 62 or 63...not sure anyways I bought it as you can well imagine...the sheet metal is very pristine and the sheet metal on my W300 Dodge is, as can be witnessed in the photo gallery very rough..fred flinstone style floor boards and looks like the old rancher up at Granite ranch was driving by sound so to speak :thinking. The data plate on this D500 cab states the tranny is an Acme T98A... I'm looking at the dash and there is 5 speed & 2 speed axle recommendations for operation all over the dash, as well when this unit was being torn down the tranny stick grip had a 5 spd pattern with a "L" over to the left of 1st gear for a total of six forward & 1 reverse gear ? This was clearly not a T98A in this D500, What I'm wondering is how many trucks like this left the assembly line with erroneous info on the data plates ? Hoping the T98A in the W100 is correct and still whats sitting between the frame rails. jwing68

The T98A and T98 are Borg Warner, I have a T98 sittin in the garage, its a 3 speed that marry's to a T18 transfer case in my 1954 Willys, is your T98A married to the transfer? what engine is it bolted to? I may be interested in that tranny if its married to the transfer, if you'd like to exchange some more info email me kingmopar440@comcast.net I have an NP435 bolted to a 225.

Hey MountainMoparRobin, this T98A is not married to the T-case, it is behind L-318, however originally truck was a poly, after reading that link that digdoug supplied I am stoked to get this tranny on the bench and verify that it is in fact a T98A jwing68
