leaded gas?

Post by farmhand66css »

I was told that if I don't use lead substitute I could ruin my heads. What are you guys doing? have you had hardened seats put in the block? are you running lead substitute?

Not sure what to do at this point :?

i always use chevron gas, it has all them additives in it that so far seems to treat the old truck right. im sure in time it would cause some probs, thats what i have always heard, but so far i have never had any probs running good gas. its that cheap *#%^ that will break you down quick.

I run a lead substitute/additive. Some say it isn't worth it but I work in
the aftermarket automotive [additive] industry so it doesn't cost me
anything. If you're using it as a part time driver, I don't think it'll ruin
the valve seats for a long time by not running an additive.... maybe once
every 3 or 4 tanks you could throw in a name brand bottle of "elixir".

Leaded Additive

Post by MountainMoparRobin »

Farmhand,
the hardened valve seats were so cheap I had them put in back in 1990 when I put the 440 in the truck originally, had a valve job done and for an added 2.00-5.00 a seat just had them put in.
my only thing is that because the compression ratio is above 9:0:1 actually 9:5:1 so I cannot burn anything less than a 91 octane gas, but I new that before I did what I did to the engine anyway, I'll pay the extra money for gas to have the engine the way I want.

Hello Matt

I'm driving a '64 W200 with a 318 Poly. I'm using an additiv as well, because leaded gas is prohibited to sell in my country since y2k. The reason is, that the seats of the valve are cast iron and not hard metal rings. Cast iron seats of the valves need lubrification - former lub was leaded gas. The new lub is the additiv. I hope you use it, too and you'll have a gread pleasure with your truck for a long time.
Kind regards
Dieter

Hey there Dieter, I'm glad you made it over to the new site. I think you sent me a picture of your ride before. You need to get your truck submitted to the profile area! Here is the link on how to do it!
