Slant 6 - which 4 speed manual?

Post by teamblend »

Hi all-

i just bought a 67 d100 shorty :) has the slant 6 - with a 3 on the tree that was converted to a floor shifter. the floor shifter really doesnt shift all that well. you have to be really ginger with it to get it in gear. it also seems like the tranny might not be in the best shape anymore - makes a heinous noise when you are off the gas and in first gear.. metal'ish..

so id like to swap out the transmission to the 4 speed floor shifter. can anyone help out to assist me in finding out which transmission i would need to bolt up to the 6? or would i be better off just swapping in a 383. :D

Hola Sir

If your truck would have had the four speed manual
shifting transmission, it would have been as Doug
stated.

All you need to do is find one, un-bolt your three
Speed at the front of the transmission, remove
the Speed-O, dis-connect the U-Joint at the rear
of the transmission and then bolt the 4 speed
NP-435 in the same location.

Take note of the spline count and the lenght of
your three speed's shaft so that you do not try to
relace the wrong year/design back into your truck.

Awesome help! thank you very much!

as of now someone converted the tree shifter to a floor shifter, but the kit feels pretty gross, and the shift gate makes shifting tough and the linkage likes to stick. will any basic floor three speed kit work for me?

thank you again!!

does the np435 only come in the d100's with a slant 6? or will a v8 tranny fit with a slant6. does it come in other dodges?

I believe the NP435 was also available with a wide ratio and a narrow ratio of gears. Maybe they used a different number for the other transmission. You will want to make sure you get the one that meets your needs. I've always prefered automatics so someone with more information will have to fill you in on the specifics of the NP435.

NP435 4sp is the stock trans, there are a number of types of 435 that will bolt in, but the main thing is spline count, 10 or 23, 10 is what came stock to your truck, 23 will work with later clutch,
both will work with your 3 arm borg and beck clutch, throwout, bell house and flywheel......
There are a few things to consider here, does your three speed have the ebrake on the end or does the ebrake cable go to the rear axle? If your cable goes to the rear axle then your set in that area, if the 3speed has the ebrake on the rear then you need to make mod's.....
The 435 will need a 2 piece driveline and carrier set with crossmember to do the swap right
in a full size truck but is not needed in a short bed truck.....
Yes, a NP 435 will work in ether a 4x4 or 2x4.....
If you were local you could have 1 of the 3 NP435's I have on my shop floor for the 3speed.....

Welcome to the forum, the NP435 is a great transmission, it's what I'm running in my pulling truck and few of the late model Cummins guys run them in the higher classes. When I was shopping for a clutch for my 74 a couple years ago, I was disappointed by the selection for the 23 spline shaft. The older 10 spline was used until much later in chevies for sure so there's a much larger offering on the friction discs. If you have any medium duty truck salvage yards around, they would be a great starting place, I picked up a complete "core" NP435 this summer for $75.

The 72 and up and possibly the late Sweptline's had a longer tailshaft to accommodate the trans mount. The longer housing would come into play if you had the proper length driveshaft for the NP435 it would need shortened. From the parts I've seen of the transmission parking brake I don't think you'd be able to run on with the later housing without modifications. My 67 has the parking brake in the drums, but it's also a W200 and I'm not sure when they started changing them over.

I feel your pain on the 3 speed floor shifter, had a 74 D100 with manual brakes/steering with a 3 on the tree. The column shifter was in pretty tough shape and I found an aftermarket shifter new in the box at an auction to replace it. It was better than the column shifter, could even get a 2nd scratch out of the ole 318 with it; then one day I grabbed for a gear and stripped the threads off one of the control rods. The threads on the other arm looked like they could at any time. Bought some threaded rod and made a couple new ones and realized the original rods were weak enough that they were flexing even with minimal pressure and adding to the spongy feeling.

Got any pics of your truck?
Corey

As per previous posts, the 10 spline NP435 will bolt up to your current bell housing.
Moving to the NP435 may change the run-out dimension of the drive shaft. It did
for me when I swapped my A745 for an NP435 on my '65 D100. If you wind up with
an NP435 from a larger truck.... the yoke might require a larger u-joint than your
drive shaft in which case you'd have to source a "wobble joint" to mate the two
together. If you're replacing the clutch components along with your tranny... these
guys will get you the right parts for you the first time....

looks like my ebrake cable goes to the rear drums directly.

I have a 1970 W100 (4x4) Power wagon with a 225 slant 6 and a three speed column shift.
Does anyone know if the NP435 will work in my vehicle? And if so, will it just bolt in?
I cannot imagine that they only made these with a column shift.
The transmission works ok but I have an after market conversion shifter on it and it is reversed shift and super sloppy.
Any help is appreciated.

Column shift 3 on the tree trans was a base level. 435 for 69 to 71 should bolt right up the bell housing but check clutch splines. 68 and older 435 will not work with your bell housing. Input length etc different.
My truck is younger than me.

You'd need a '69 to '71 NP435 or NP445 with the correct 23 spline input
shaft. As for being a direct bolt in.... I'm not sure. I'm assuming your
truck has the A230 in it now? Perhaps if you post up the case length
someone could compare it to a NP 4spd for you. :idea :thinking :2cents
