stalling
I've got a stalling issue that I need help with.
1970 D200, 318, auto with a Holley 2209 2-barrel carb. Granted the carb could use a re-build but there's something about this problem that I've never come across before. Carb acts as it is supposed to. Choke works well, fast idle and slow idle are fine and controllable with a blip of the throttle. Here it is. Engine idles just fine in Park and Neutral, but in any drive gear R or D the engine loads up and stalls. Really aggravating because I'm usually in traffic when this happens. Tired of left foot braking while feathering the throttle or shifting into neutral at stop lights. Adjusted throttle stop until it does 10 mph with no foot on the gas. No luck anywhere. Recent tune-up, no visible vacuum leaks. Could it be my torque converter?

Re: stalling
you may not have any vacum leaks, but have you checked what kind of vacum you are pulling. it could be worn rings. what is the mileage is on your 318. Ozzie.

Re: stalling

Re: stalling
Actual mileage undetermined. No Black smoke. The vacuum question is a good one. Could it be the diaphram on the carb or distributor

Re: stalling
look i had the same problem with my old carter on my 70 d100 and the problem is in your float. on these trucks, sometimes the float will get stuck in the reservoir so you either have to re-build it or beat it. most of the time the jarring from the beating will knock the float loose, other wise, it's simple to rebuild, and a kit ain't but $12-$15 BUT YOU HAVE TO BUY THE FLOAT SEPARATE! that's the only catch, but they're just a couple bucks. if you can send me a video of wut it's doing, i can pinpoint the problem... if you cant, just hit me back.

Re: stalling
I would put a vacuum gauge on it and see about a vacuum leak. A sticking float is also a possibility, but I would suspect vacuum first.

Re: stalling
Speaking of vacuum, my husband rebuilt the carburetor not too long ago, and ever since then, the transmission wines all the gears out before shifting into the next gear. Its' a factory 3 speed automatic. We checked the vacuum lines and could not find any ruptures or disconnections. It never did this before the carburetor rebuild. Any ideas on a diagnosis?

Re: stalling
Kickdown linkage is either not hooked back up or out of adjustment-it's the rod that runs down to the lever on top of the shift tower above the selector link-attaches to the carb link near where the throttle link hooks up-as far as the carb issues,a holley and a carter are 2 different animals-know the carters, the holleys...not so much but the principals the same. if the float was stuck the bowl would overflow into the venturis and the truck would flood out completely and probably be very hard to start-a vacuum leak would make it run lean not rich-the airflow through the venturi is what pulls the fuel from the bowl, through the jets&into the intake. the idle jets are probably out of adjustment.

Re: stalling
Update. Ran gumout in the tank, Shot the carb with cleaner and adjusted the idle mixture back to Holley specs (close, then 1 1/2 turns out on both screws). Works just fine when cold. Still stalls after warm- up. Re-build in the works.

Re: stalling
just had a case of a sticking float AND a vacuum leak...they kind of balanced each other out, truck would run, but not very well...

Re: stalling
The stalling problem is most likely a vacuum leak. Small block Dodges have an intake gasket issue that can be difficult to diagnose. It can leak from the camshaft side, if does the engine will ping under load.

Re: stalling
no ping, runs strong on the freeway. no ping under load on hills. Gotta re-build kit. Need to get some carb soak and hopefully my problems will be gone
