Oil Pan for 360 Swap

Post by hotrat62 »

Hi, I am currently building a 62 d-200 rat rod. It has a spring under conversion front and rear so it sits very low. My problem is that I want to swap out that poly 318 for my built up 360. The 318 uses a front sump pan, and the 360 I have is a rear sump. Because my truck is lowered so much, I cannot use the rear sump pan as I have seen others use. I also know the 318 oil pan will not fit the 360 due to the 360's larger main caps. I have not been able to find a front sump pan for the 360, new or used. I could really appreciate the help. Thanks, Joe

Hola and Ah Ho Ho Ho Joe

If you do not like the location of the Van/Truck 360 oil pan, then go for the 360 "car" version. Or warm up the A318.

If you have the equipment to do what I did, it worked quite well. I took a peice of sheet metal and bent it into an "L" shape. I cut and inch and a half out of the rear sump pan, and welded the sheet metal in. I had to bend the pickup tube a tiny bit to fit, but I was able to do that by hand. I only lost about a half quart of capacity, but I gained 3 inches of ride height clearance. The next issue was the driver's side header. I had to cut about an inch out of one of the tubes and rebend it and weld it back together...that was a little more work, and I still have a slight exhaust leak there as I was unable to weld all the way around the tube. Now my frame hits the ubolts that hold the springs on when I hit big bumps. Here's a poor pic of the pan...If you look closely you can see the shortened header tube as well. The splice is where the paint didn't stick to the coupler peice I welded in.

They dont offer any front sump kits in summit. Because the truck has a spring under set up, the axle and steering is completely in the way of the oil pan. I guess I'll just swap in a 340 since I can use the poly's oil pan on that.

:goodpost I agree with Red. Keep the poly. Buy a set of headers from Norm and put a 4 barrel on it.

Well, how did he do the oil pan in his 70? I am thinking about keeping the poly, but I already have a couple of la engines built. If I do keep the poly, I'd want to build it with higher compression and a better cam. Do you know where I can obtain poly performance parts? Thanks, Joe

I told you how I did the oil pan on mine! It's a 71 not a 70, but that's the one that has the modified pan. You can get within a half an inch of how low mine sits without modifying the header tube. If you want to be just an inch and a half higher, you can just gently dent the pan to clear the centerlink.

Hey, I guess I will try to modify my oil pan, but what do you guys think of the Milodon truck pan number 30985 as seen at Jegs http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/stores/s ... 2_80196_-1 and Summit http://store.summitracing.com/partdetai ... 4294908110 It looks kike it has been shortened enough to fit my steering, and the depth isnt low enough to interfere with ground clearance.
Thanks, Joe

It looks to me like it is exactly the same as the rear sump stock pan that I started with. If it wasn't under 6 inches of snow, I would go out and measure the exact length of the sump on the one I shortened. I'll look to see if I have any other pics of it.

Digging up an old thread...

I just posed the exact same question. Poly 318 to LA 360 swap in 69 D100. What pan works? What did you end up with?
