I'm friends with local guy that scraps. He buys junk iron from local farmers. He knows that I Collect dodge trucks so he lets me take parts off before he sells the iron. The only cost I will have is in the spacer.
raceguy wrote:Ok so today I decided to pull a 318 with a 4 speed and a bellhousing with dual clutch fork holes. The motor and transmission were removed from a street sweeper. After removing the bellhousing and the I noticed that it had a 13inch clutch. So I removed the clutch and pressure plate and I notice that the flywheel looked to be same diameter as the big block 361 hydrualic setup flywheel plus it had the six bolt holes and not the eight bolts pattern. The flywheel removed from the 318 that came out of a street sweeper had 158 teeth with six bolt and the big block flywheel removed from the heavy duty hads 186 teeth with eight bolt. Looks like I have to remove the ring gear from the heavy duty flywheel 186 teeth and put it on the 318 flywheel that was in a street sweeper so my big block stater will work. Other than that I need to have a spacer made so that the flywheel will not be engaged with the starter all the time. Also I will have to use the four speed from the street sweeper or change the inpute shaft so the bigger clutch will work. I dont know if all industrial 318 with manual trans have the bigger diameter flywheel with the 13inch cluctch but this one did. The engine was dated 1982 and had a tag from chrysler mounted on the cylinder head. Hope this info will help somebody else.
What is the diameter of the 158 tooth flywheel? I believe I have the same one, from a 76 S600 that had a 361/540.
What is the diameter of the 186 tooth flywheel?
What is the diameter of the input shaft of the transmission?

Digging up old bones here but some of us are still curious.
In my quest to land a big block in my truck, here is what I have learned.
Yes the BB bell mentioned requires a 2 bolt starter. It is not and won’t work from the more modern gear reduction version the car guy’s are used to.
The hydraulic bell requires a 186 tooth flywheel and a direct drive starter made for it.

I installed a Car 400 BB into my 70 D500. Bellhousing was from a 67/68 Dodge pickup.. Flywheel was from the LA 318 that came from the D500.
BB Starter From a 413 Industrial from a 73/74 C series truck. Starter was a core so snout was installed onto a 318 Hydraulic bell starter.
Everything worked.
My truck is younger than me.

This starter carries the same Chrysler p/n as the 2 bolt starter used in industrial big block applications. It is used in slant six fork lift applications
If the picture is accurate it is a 2 bolt starter with a mounting configuration very similar to that of the direct drive starters used in big block trucks.

Watching with great interest. Be nice to have an alternative and possibly improved starter .
You and me both!
Even the three bolt starters for hydro bell are getting hard to find new or rebuilt. The two bolt nose cones for big block are even harder to find.

It is possible that starter may work. It wouldn’t surprise me.
Sometimes you have to think outside the box. I have found that a marine starter fits and works with these bell housings also. It is a little longer though, and you have to be careful as some are reverse rotation.

I took a bunch of pictures but they are too large to share.
The starter bolts up just fine. Has same number of teeth as old one. When I extended the starter drive it looked as if it went out as far as the old one.
Unfortunately, once I bolted it up, it spins without contacting the flywheel teeth. Doesn't event hit the flywheel.
