1964 with A745 to what?

Post by my5thmopar »

What's my manual transmission options with little or no modifications to a /6. Of course this has the hydraulic clutch. My second option, correct me if IM wrong, is to change over to a 904. What do ya say? BTW, I'm building a /6 with AC, PS and possibly PB. I've got a collection of parts but, was wondering what the gurus say here. Thanks Craig

all that was available for the 10 spline hydraulic was 3 spd, 4 spd (NP420) or 4 spd (NP435). I prefer the 435. They did have a 435 with the ebrake on the back, (just sold one), but most did not. The newer trans input shafts are to short to reach the crank thru a hydraulic bell.

If you found all the parts to go A833 or A 833 OD behind( 70's/80's trucks used the OD trans) the SL 6 that would be a viable option though will need some fabrication alternative.
You can make a bracket to convert the mechanical clutch arm to use the 68 and older hydraulic slave. Buddy of mine did that nearly 15 years ago and truck is still on the road being driven by his widow.
My truck is younger than me.

Did your buddy use the mech clutch bell in a pre 69 truck? If so, how did he mount it?

I'm curious how this could be done with the current clutch setup. A manual would be ok but, my A745 has the brake on it and I'm building a new slant 6 with Ps & ac, SIDs, new diff. The original stuff is worn out. Craig

He used the bell housing,Clutch,Flywheel etc from an 1980 318 truck that had the A833 OD trans. Original 66 cross member was cut out and he built a new crossmember to hang the 833. You would use the parts from a SL6 truck with the A833OD trans of the same vintage /years that used that trans. He used the mechanical bell housing with a custom made bracket to use the hydraulic slave cyl. Only problem he had was slave was upside down so he simply bled it right side up then bolted it on.

I think this type A833OD setup would work with mods made to the truck, but the OP didn't want to makeany permanent changes: http://www.slantsix.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=60022
