how much gear oil in an A745 trans
how much gear oil in an A745 trans
Just rebuilt the trans in my '71 D100 and wasn't sure how much gear oil it was suppost to hold. My service manual says 2 3/4 pts and an internet site says 5 1/4 pts, or do i just fill until it is slightly below the fill hole?
Thanks
Thanks
Re: how much gear oil in an A745 trans
Use the specs in service manual.
Can't fill it any more than runs out of the filler hole anyway.

Does it take gear oil or ATF transmission fluid?? I think it takes ATF,it's an automatic right??

Re: how much gear oil in an A745 trans
That is a manual trans right? Use the 80/90W gear oil. DO NOT use ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid) as that is for "Automatic" trannies. I always filled my transmissions till the oil starts seeping out of the "Fill Hole".

Consult a Factory Service Manual [FSM]. I'm
not sure that the A745s used 90W.

if it is a standard transmission it takes gear oil.If it's an automatic transmission,it takes ATF.Either way, check with the owner's manual, service manual or call a transmission repair shop and ask,

How's your W200 coming along Pat?MOPAT wrote:Good answer HOBCOBBLE>

Yeah.... those FSMs come in handy every once in a while
Seems to me that the 3spd manual tranny I just yanked out
of a '70 D100 had some thin red fluid running out of the
tailshaft I'm sure someone can quote the
information from their FSM before I get home tonight to
look it up.....

According to my owner's manual (pg 40) the A745-3sp and A903 use Chrysler ATF AQ-ATF-2848A or 2351A OPTIONAL
is 80/90 SAE in HOT climates. 90 SAE MINERAL GEAR OIL is also an option in HOT climates.
For the 435 and other manuals it is 50 SAE MOTOR OIL above 32 degrees below that it is 30 SAE MOTOR OIL.
Just Saying.................
Both my shop manuals say the same.
John
The W200 is STILL in the dismantle and parts gathering (and $$$$ gathering ) phase, BUT I'm moving along although a LOT slower than I'd like.

Are you referring to a Dodge FSM?husker wrote:Just rebuilt the trans in my '71 D100 and wasn't sure how much gear oil it was suppost to hold. My service manual says 2 3/4 pts and an internet site says 5 1/4 pts, or do i just fill until it is slightly below the fill hole?

Re: how much gear oil in an A745 trans
Yes, it is a dodge 68-71 truck FSM. I put 2-3 qts of 80-90wt gear lube in it and that got it to about 1/4" below the fill hole.

Re: how much gear oil in an A745 trans
The 2 3/4 is in IMPERIAL pints.
3.25 US pints according to my FSM
That 80/90 weight will make it shift REAL STIFF..........IMHO

Re: how much gear oil in an A745 trans
I have always used SAE 80/90 gear oil in all my manual transmissions and never had any problem with it. So... reading that you can use ATF fluid... boggles my mind! I NEVER realized this...
I just had to look in my 1967 DODGE TRUCK Service manual and here is what it says:
Page 40 of the Specifications section: 3.25 Pints
Page 0-20 in the LUBRICATION section:
(I condensed this a little bit)
Chrysler Built A745 use Automatic Transmission Fluid AQ-ATF2848A Suffix A. Part number 1843314 is a fluid of this group and recommended for all temperature ranges. Multi purpose gear lubricant SAE 90 may be used in warm climates.
Then it goes on to the next section about Automatic Transmissions and says to use Automatic Transmission Fluid AQ-ATF2848A Suffix A

Re: how much gear oil in an A745 trans
i also saw in the fsm years ago that its supposed to use trans fluid. but, in the last couple 3spds i have owned i used 20w/50 motor oil. didnt want to go full gear oil on it, figured it would be too thick, but i also didnt trust it to plain old atf. i never had any issues in all the miles i put on them, and it made the trans a bit quieter on the road.
now my very first 66, back when i didnt own a fsm, got 80w/90 gear oil, there too i also never had any issues from that trans. but, when it was cold out, winter time when we got below 40 degrees, it was hard to shift untill the gear lube warmed up. never had that issue with the 20/50.

I threw 80wt mineral oil in the 435 in the crew for towing this last summer.Went to start it today, had to push in the clutch,it was soo thick it was boging the engine in neutral!

The funny thing is that it was only in the 30s. I wasn't planning on running it again till late spring,so didn't change it.
