L-700 or A100 on steroids

Post by Dick »

Gentlemen:

I am looking for a forum on the L-700 or maybe known as an A100 on steroids.

I've been around long enough to remember the A100's as brand new trucks. They created quite a sensation back then with their unique lines but they were notoriously under powered. That was until a couple of enterprising chaps dropped a punched out 383 in behind the seat and turned up at the local drag strip. They had a funny little addition on the extended tailgate.....it was a set of casters. This thing had serious go power and when it went down the track wheelstanding all the way it was quite the sight.

Anyway that was history. I'm into more mundane persuits these days. I own a very pedestrian 1998 Dodge Ram 4x4 which get used for hauling horses around.

The reason I am looking for L-700 is that I think it would be more fun to restore an L700 (with the Cummins diesel of course) to be an elegant and gutzy horse hauler. I ride with the Shriners Musical Ride and we are always going to parades etc. Usually we show up at a parade with our 25 matched coloured horses and our 45 foot semi trailer pulled by a big blue 700 hp. Kenworth. I think the L700 would certainly be cooler as a tow vehicle and because they are now antiques we could put a flat deck or low boy on it and use it in the parades.

Anyhow some of my musings about A100's and L700's. Any help locating tech specs and restoration info would be most appreciated.

Thanks.

Underpowered? The A-100 was the only compact truck/van that offered a V8 at the time, making them the most powerful compact trucks on the market. Now the 170 slant six...that's another story.

I know that there are a few L truck owners here, none that
have undertaken such a project that I have heard of.....
but maybe I haven't just "heard"......
I know that Gordo has a L 600 with a 361 that he bought last year.....
they are quite the neat truck; they are out there to be had,
but some parts for the cab can be a little hard to find since not everything
was shared with the A vans and not that many L's were made.
Any good truck Mopar parts book manual covering the L trucks should list whatever you need to know as far as stock parts numbers, they did share a lot of the running gear with
the big D trucks......

L-700

Thanks Jeff:

I also got a lot of replies from the A-100 group on Yahoo. Quite an interesting discussion. According to some the brake parts are difficult to find.

You're right it is a very neat looking truck and that is why I find it so appealing. The L-700 with the cummins diesel is just the ticket for pulling our horse trailer.

Thanks for your feedback.

Glenn.

New brake parts for anything 300 and over can be hard to come by,
though most stuff can be rebuilt, but drums are next to impossable
new and even used can be a chore.

This is a few years old but I was wondering if any progress was made??

I am pondering a L-series rollback for my shop. I have the chassis but need to locate a solid cab. (I restore cars for a living so I don't want a rusty one. I have enough of that on my customers cars!)

I am looking for information about the older 1969-1970 Dodge L700 trucks, I recently have purchased a reissued model made by Lindberg of the old Dodge L700 cab over truck and would like to get it as close to original color as I can. With the exception of the cab paint (going to use a Mineral Gray) paint code PBM. I need to see what the original color of the 361 V-8 was and if the transmission, driveline, and gas tanks were painted black. As well as some interior pics. I am hoping to find out as much information about these trucks as I can. If there are any members that own one of these I would really like some pictures of them.

I have a 68 L600(was a sears truck all of it's life) and the engine is silver, the drive shaft's and transmission are not painted and the fuel tank's are black. Mine has all the orig paint and equip and being in arizona all of it's life is easy to see everything as we have zero rust. Send me your email and i'll send you pic's of what ever you would like! BTW, I need a left door upper vent window hinge(the little part that is held to the vent window with 2 small screws) so if some one has 1 they would sell me, Please let me know!!
