Re: big block
Yes have seen and heard of the 400 big block, it came out in the 71 production year as the replacement for the 383, first saw them in the Chargers, but I think that would be a transplant for a van

Hola Plant City person
As already stated, it was an up-date to the 383 which had been used since 1959. In the cars, the 1972 2 bbl was at 190 HP* @ 4400 RPM's and the van/truck version was at 180 Hp* @ 3600 RPM's. The torque for the van/truck version was 315* @ 2400 RPM's and the car was only at 310* @ 2400 RPM's. As an four barrell with dual exhaust, this was an car division thing only.
As with its larger cousin, the 440 and the 400 lived to the end of the 1978 production year.
* ... remember this was with the "new way" of rating an engine's power and torque.

Re: big block
400's suck! Especially in an A 100. You would be way better off building a stout small block.I had a 426 wedge in an A100,it took lots of fabrication to make it work.Better off sticking with the correct A100 tourqe flite and building a good 340 or 360
If you have to have a big block a 383 is a great motor and I have had 20 mpg +383's.400's are good for making a stroker motor but why anyone would go to thru the hassle of stroking a van is beyond me!
