Re: Pics please!!!!
How would a guy get the transfer case bracket out of the frame rails, porta power it wider or what?

Re: Pics please!!!!
I have pulled a transfer case cross member out and just took out a front one a couple of days ago. Hardest part was getting the rivets out. I FINALLY found out how to do it real quick and easy. You need a heavy punch, good sized heavy SHARP chisel, hand sledge and a torch. Heat the rivet red hot then take the chisel and shear the head off. Reheat the rivet red hot and use the punch on the rivet. After I did it that way most of them came out by the third smack on the rivet. You can cut the rivet head off with the torch but they are more difficult to punch out if you do it that way. The slag builds up and won't let the rivet go through as easily. HTH

Re: Pics please!!!!
Like Russ mentions, they are riveted on.
His method sounds pretty good.
An Air Chisel or a grinder would also work.

Re: Pics please!!!!
The air chisel did not work worth a darn for me. That's what I used previously that took so long. And that's the what I started with, had a lot of trouble and took forever. The method I outlined worked unbelievably well for me.

Re: Pics please!!!!
I've found in my experience that the torch is the easiest- lay the head of the torch on the side of the frame and cut it that way- blowing the slag off to the side- then take a center punch and a 3 lb drilling hammer (mini sledge-hammer) and hit it a few times... I have bad luck and even worse aim so I strongly reccomend holding the punch with a pair of pliers

Re: Pics please!!!!
THAT HELPS ALOT THANKS
Re: Pics please!!!!
No, i know that part, i actually have a tip that is angled for cutting off rivets, it has a flat side and an angle, so the torch head is angled away, it will blow them right off, and a quick brrraaappp with a air chisel with a center punch tip and they come rigth out.
What Im wondering is if the crossmember easily comes out of the frame, it looks like a tight fit, that is what i meant by the porta power to spread the frame rails a bit to give you room.

Here is an example, it works good, mine is a little different, must be a diff brand, but it does the same thing.

I've been known to break out the ol' hi-lift jack for frame speading purposes. I dunno what a porta-power is but i'm guessing it'd achieve the same thing...

Re: Pics please!!!!
Porta-power will spread the rails fine. I have done it several times pulling 47RE's out of Cummins powered rigs. My crossmember came out pretty easy with a few raps from a hand sledge.

Re: Pics please!!!!
Porta-Power is a brand name hydraulic ram used to straighten body and frame parts. Most come in kits with several different length attachments. Cool units and you can get them pretty cheap these days. I think Harbor Freight has the big ones for about $150. Well worth it. Mike
