1970 Dodge D500 powerwagon
Hi
New to the group . I picked up this 1970 D500 4x4
Off of a Christmas tree farm where I was told it spent most of its life. The clutch went a couple of years ago and they parked it. The engine is free and turns easily and looks good . It’s in pretty good condition , very minimal rust , interior in decent shape. It has the factory pto driven front winch and dump stake body .
I think it’s pretty cool and plan on restoring it and using it at my
Farm. Just curious to what you think it’s worth as it currently sits.

Re: 1970 Dodge D500 powerwagon
If it is a factory 4X4, it would be a W500. If it says "D500" on the badges, my guess is that the cab has been swapped or it was converted to 4X4. It is a hell of a find.Vintage4x4 wrote: ↑Mon Jan 01, 2024 10:14 amHi

Is the dump electric or is the hydraulic pump off the PTO?

Thanks! I’m not sure about the dump bed , I’m assuming it works off the pto , but flat bedded home and haven’t had a chance to get into it yet. Here’s the fender badge and vin plate if that helps.

Re: 1970 Dodge D500 powerwagon
That is NOT a D nor W500. They are considerably bigger.
That is a W300 1 ton 4x4. Luckily a W300 is probably worth more money, simply because W500s are too big to be really sought after.
The winch & dump add value. Nice find!

Ok. I appreciate it. I guess someone put the 500 badge on it.
I thought it was a 1 ton , it’s pretty beefy though. Lol
What do you think it’s worth?
Thanks!

Re: 1970 Dodge D500 powerwagon
Look over on the power wagon websites, some have classified ads, both current & past sales. It'll give you a general idea of what they have bring in the past & what people are asking today.
My ball park guess is if you get it to run & drive then maybe $7000. I have seen them in pristine shape listed for over $20K

Re: 1970 Dodge D500 powerwagon
Yes, as Bucky said, its a 1 ton and someone swapped D500 fenders onto it along with the badges. 1 ton fenders are distinctly different, as are 400, 500 and up. Hard to read the VIN plate, but it does show it as a W300. Upper right corner "E30" means W300. All the axle and spring ratings on the plate are for a W300. The actual VIN number is indecipherable in the pic. Based on the instrument cluster bezel, it is definitely a 70 or 71. You will never find front drums for that axle.Vintage4x4 wrote: ↑Mon Jan 01, 2024 2:45 pmOk. I appreciate it. I guess someone put the 500 badge on it.

Only when they don't structurally fail, which I've experienced on a W300 once and seen both rotted away on another W300.Wildergarten wrote: ↑Mon Jan 01, 2024 11:40 pmBut drums can be relined inside with a superior material for about $500ea.

Re: 1970 Dodge D500 powerwagon
I appreciate all the info. Sounds like down the road it would be cheaper to do a disc brake conversion or swap axles. It’s just going to be something to use around my farm , pick up things in town , maybe a truck show or cruise in. I actually thought about doing a Cummins swap and put a nice aluminum diamondplate welders body I have on another truck on it . It’s got good bones ,
And I like vintage trucks that are upgraded to be usable today. Here’s my 56 GMC , which is another project of mine . It’s actually on a 2001 super duty chassis with a 7.3 powerstroke, 4 wheel disc brakes , 6 speed And custom dump bed. I didn’t build it , I bought it this way , I usually get 2 or 3 people come up my driveway a week inquiring about buying it . Lol. It usually goes like this “ What ya doing with the 56 Chevy ? “ . “ looking at it just like you .” Wanna sell it? “ “ Nope” lol !
I bought the W300 for $2k with clean paperwork, I think it was worth it , and think it’s a good starting point for something cool .

Per the data plate, it is a 1970. The Serial Number is E33BES105373 and decipherable to me.PwrWgnDrvr wrote: ↑Mon Jan 01, 2024 9:04 pmThe actual VIN number is indecipherable in the pic. Based on the instrument cluster bezel, it is definitely a 70 or 71.

Tnx Bill, but you left the 0 out between the E and S. Funny, cuz that's the digit that indicates the year (70)soopernaut wrote: ↑Tue Jan 02, 2024 6:55 amPer the data plate, it is a 1970. Re: 1970 Dodge D500 powerwagon
$2000 was a very good deal. It won't take much to get it completely ship shape mechanically.
Swapping to a modern 8 lug front disc equipped axle would be a breeze, but many claim that the pinion angles of those axles won't work with the divorced NP205 transfer case.

Re: 1970 Dodge D500 powerwagon
Thanks Bucky. I thought so to. It’ll be a bit before I get it in my shop. My daughters K5 blazer is next on the list .it’s about a year over due. Lol I promised her it would be done last year , but been too busy with work and the farm. The blazer was a great deal too. It was a true barn find. In a garage since the early 90’s . It was a show truck in the 80’s only 23k original miles. Someone put a lot of money into it. We’re redoing the body, which is pretty decent , just changing the doors and rockers and painting it. and putting it on 44” dick cepek tires . It got a 383 stroker, a lot of performance parts , ford 9” rear and we’re putting dual edelbrocks and a tunnel ram. It’s gonna be her cool toy. Lol
Too many projects not enough time .

I'm not sure what modern really means anymore, but some of the 80-93 Dodge trucks used a NP205 and a disc brake axle. GM had more years available with the same combination. Wouldn't the geometry be similar to one of those trucks, or does the flat frame cause issues. I think one could mock everything up copying the geometry of one of those trucks, even if they had to make custom brackets to mount everything.

Re: 1970 Dodge D500 powerwagon
How close in parallelism do the yokes have to be? Is the 1°resolution limit of my instrument good enough? Couldn't one simply shim the axle to get it?soopernaut wrote: ↑Wed Jan 03, 2024 6:44 amI think one could mock everything up copying the geometry of one of those trucks, even if they had to make custom brackets to mount everything.

Re: 1970 Dodge D500 powerwagon
The whole pinion angle debate comes from the divorced vs married transfer case set-ups. 74 & back were divorced, meaning it is not bolted directly to the transmission, sets much further back from the front axle, uses a longer front propeller shaft and the axle differential is angled differently than later axles.
1975 & later trucks all had married transfer cases.
Ironically the cut off for front drum brakes vs front discs is pretty much the same time frame. 74 & older used drums, 75 & later predominately discs.
By "modern" I meant 75-93, even though 75-79 were the full time years & 80-93 would be better choice for a swap.

sweet truck
its kind of odd that having the divorced t-case would have a steeper angle over a non divorced
does the non divorced use in c/v type front drive shaft?
would think with the longer shaft they could use less pinon angle
but anyway if you where going to shim the axle to align the pinon angle you would mess with the caster
