With the dial hub lockers removed from a dana 44 how much should the axle shaft be able to be moved up and down. Trying to determine the state of the spindle bearings.
Thanks,

axle shaft movement
Re: axle shaft movement
The axle shaft itself will move a fair amount, the only thing locating the shaft is a bushing # 2-03-4 in the diagram. It is just a bushing, not a bearing, so there will be wear allowing more play. The lock out hub will actually help locate the shaft as well. But, movement of the shaft does not have anything to do with play in the spindle bearings that support the hub. That is adjusted by the pre load on the spindle bearing nuts #22-06-9. Hope this answers your question.

Re: axle shaft movement
It does. My axle is a 1980 open knuckle but seems like the same would apply. Mine does have spindle roller bearing so maybe I better just take it apart more.
