1969 4x4 lug pattern question

Post by jdmorgan »

Hello, 1st time poster. I have a 1969 D100 long bed that I want to convert to 4 wheel drive. I want to keep the original 8 3/4 rear and the lug pattern is 5x4.5. I was told that 68-71 W100's used a 5x5.5 lug pattern, is this true? I have a dana 44 out of a 79 W100/150 that is full time 4x4 with 5x4.5 pattern. But if the 69 W100 used 5x5.5 then I would like to go with the 5x5.5 pattern and go with a CAB dana 44. and if the 69 W100's used 5x5.5 does anyone have axles for 8 3/4 with 5x5.5?

Just find a matched set of axles from a 1980 to 1993 truck and your golden. Easier to find brakes etc. If your intent on the 8 3/4 diff then you will have to source axles/drums or buy new axles from an axle builder. :thinking

69-71 W100s used the 5 on 5.5" lug pattern. 68 still used the 8 lug Dana 60. If you want a 8.75 axle with the 5.5" bolt pattern you'll likely have to get a different axle unless you can find a 69-71 4wd axle and swap shafts. The 72-74 axles are wider. You could also redrill if there is enough room.

soopernaut, That is what I am looking for then. A set of 69-71 1/2 ton powerwagon axles (for 8 3/4) or the 8 3/4 from a 69-71 powerwagon.

5 on 5.5 is easy. ANY F100 or F150 leaf spring 4wd. Some are direct bolt in, some will need new spring perches. And unlike 60s Dodge stuff, brand new brakes are easy to find AND affordable. Buy the matching transfer case when you get your axles, regardless of the donor vehicle used.

J series trucks used the same bolt pattern, but the brake parts can be insanely expensive. CJs had the same bolt pattern and transfer cases, mated to narrow weak sister axles. Both were o.e.m. spring under, requiring a perch swap to use in a Dodge.

Even later Lifestyle era Dodges ran the Ford/Jeep bolt pattern. With the perches in the right location. And affordable brake parts.

If you plan to ever actually use the 4wd, step up to an 8 lug axle now. The D44 5 lug is a decent axle, but...
If I didn't build it, it ain't mine.

The front differential on a Ford will be on the opposite side than the Dodge.

Just think what it would look like installed using a custom drive shaft. Angles on U joints might be a little much. :pale

That's why I said to grab the transfer case from the donor vehicle. Then which side the front shaft drops is already sorted out. I have a line on a set of axles and a divorce mounted t-case to go under my D100, and another set to go under my Pilot House. D60F/D70R and an NP208 for the Swepty. D44F/9"R and an NP205/203 doubler case for the PH. Just need to get the K1500Silverado finished and then it's a straight up trade.

So tired of dealing with one wheel drive trucks on a farm...

Backing plates and drums from any late model 81-93 era 9 1/4" dodge 1/2 ton truck rear will bolt right on your 8 3/4" and you will have 11" x 2.5" brakes with the 5 on 5.5".

Just remember that D100/150 series had 5 on 4 1/2 till 84/85 or so. :thinking

1984 was the final year for the 5-on-4-1/2". 1985 was the first for the 5-on-5-1/2". I've owned both, so I know.

You are correct. :Thumbsup I put 84 rotors and drums on my 69 to keep the 4.5" pattern.

Newest truck in the 80's style I have is an 81 SL 6 Auto LB Standard cab parting out. Wasn't positive of bolt year pattern change.
